Hillcrest moves up to top Tuscaloosa area high school softball top 5 for week of April 10

Hillcrest moved up to the top spot in the The Tuscaloosa News top-5 softball teams this week, but there is little change within the rankings for the week.

The high school softball season started in mid-February, and with the conclusion of winter sports earlier this month, it is now in full swing.

Each week, The Tuscaloosa News will rank the top five teams in the area, regardless of classification. Here are the top-5 teams in the Tuscaloosa area, regardless of classification, for results through April 10.

1. Hillcrest (20-8)

Why: The Lady Patriots jump into the top spot after they went 2-0 over the last week, defeating area foe Northridge 6-2 and Calera 6-3. They currently sit in the top spot in Class 6A, Area 6, currently 3-0 in area play.

Last week: Ranked No. 2

2. Tuscaloosa County (19-7)

Why: The Lady Wildcats dropped two area games to Thompson (2-1) and Hoover (13-0). They were able to bounce back and pick up a win over in-county foe Sipsey Valley, defeating them 6-0 on Monday.

Last week: Ranked No. 1

3. Northside (27-17-1)

Why: The Lady Rams went 6-5 over the last week and are in the No. 1 spot in Class 4A, Area 7, being 4-0 in area play.

Last week: Ranked No. 3

4. Winfield (21-3)

Why: Winfield dropped its third game of the season last week in a 4-0 loss to Hamilton. Outside of that, they picked up six wins, defeating Carbon Hill, Phillips (17-0), Marion County (11-2), Hackleburg (8-0) and two revenge wins over Hamilton (3-1, 5-3).

Last week: Ranked No. 4

5. Demopolis (14-10-1)

Why: The Lady Tigers are 2-0 in area play and are riding a three-game winning streak with two wins over Hale County (7-0, 4-1) and a win over Selma (20-3)

Last week: Ranked No. 5

Other teams for consideration: American Christian Academy, Brookwood, Lamar County, Sulligent
