High School Wrestling: Two unbeatens, five champs lead Region state qualifiers

Two are undefeated.

Five are defending champions.

Two of those champs are bidding for their fourth title.

That’s how the group of 47 wrestlers who will represent the Monroe County Region in the MHSAA individual state championships at Ford Field Friday and Saturday breaks down.

Airport’s Jack Mills (36-0) and Zachary Taylor of Gibraltar Carlson (49-0) head to Detroit without a loss.

The defending champions are Kade Kluce, Haydn Nutt, Cameron Chinavare and Kole Katschor of Dundee along with Milan’s Angelina Pena.

Blake Cosby (144) (foreground) and Kole Katschor (157) behind and the rest of the Vikings going to the state meet run through clean and jerk repetitions. The Vikings are preparing for the Individual State Wrestling Finals at Ford Field in Detroit Friday and Saturday.

Kluce and Pena both already own three state championships.

Kluce is trying to join Brandon Whitman (2015-18), Stoney Buell (2018-21), Casey Swiderski (2019-22) and Braeden Davis (2020-23) as four-time champs for Dundee.

Pena, already the most decorated female wrestler in Region history, will be trying to cement her legacy. She is one of five Region girls who will be wrestling at state.

Dundee leads the Region with 12 state qualifiers. That number could have been bigger, but two Vikings were unable to compete in regional competition. The only losses Dundee wrestlers have suffered in the Division 3 state individual tournament have come against teammates.

Cameron Chinavarre (132), Donny Beaufait (150), Kole Katschor (157) and Blake Cosby (144) run through strength and conditioning drills above two rounds of 20 goblet squats with weights this past Tuesday at practice at Dundee High School. The Vikings are preparing for the Individual State Wrestling Finals at Ford Field in Detroit Friday and Saturday.

Jefferson is second in the Region with nine state qualifiers and Bedford has eight.

The finals begin Friday in Detroit and will conclude Saturday.

A complete list of Region qualifiers follows with their weight class and record.
