HIGH SCHOOL TRACK ROUNDUP: Algonquin sweeps up at District E D1 track championships

Girls' track

District E Division 1 Class Championship: Algonquin senior Elena Westphal won the javelin (112-10) and juniors Kate DiTullio was tops in the triple jump (34-6) and Brigid Purcell won the 2 mile (12:08.06) and was second in the mile (5:16.72) to pace the Titans to the team title on Saturday at North Middlesex Regional.

Algonquin took the meet with 115.5 points, edging Mid-Wach A rivals Wachusett (96.67) and Westborough (56) for the top spot. Nipmuc took third with 52 points, while Shrewsbury was fifth with 51 points.

Algonquin's Nikita Nayar, Austeja Bazikas, Sheila Purcell and Haley Dunham also won the 3,200 relay (10:42.38). Titans sophomore Betsy Bertonazzi placed second in the discus (87-3) and junior Olivia LaBelle was second in the 400 hurdles, fourth in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the pole vault.

Leominster senior Diamani Canuto was named the meet's Outstanding Athlete after winning the high jump (5-5) and the 200 (25.76) and placing second in the 400 (1:01.49).

Wachusett's Ashlynn Witt also picked up a pair of wins, as the senior won the mile (5:14.68) and 800 (2:22.39). The Mountaineers also got stellar performances from junior Nyah Santana, who was second in the 200 (25.89) and third in the 100 (12.54) and senior Lena Takahashi, who was second in the 2 mile (12:16.28).

Wachusett senior Claire Huck was third in the 100 hurdles (15.78) and was 10th in the long jump.

Westborough's Melinda Haagensen continued to shine for the Rangers, as the senior set a league record in the pole vault, topping 2014 leap of 11-6 set by Algonquin's Bridget Owen. Haagensen, who also finished second in the long jump (16-10), edged teammate Katelyn Winchester for the top spot in the pole vault (9-6).

Shrewsbury claimed a pair of relays, as Anya Pyro, Alexandra Welch, Sarah Edwardsen and Sarah Sullivan won the 400 relay (51.93) and Ellie Michalowski, Amanda Kalinowski, Paige Umile and Grace Garbarino took the 1,600 relay (4:14.17).

Nipmuc freshman Riley Restic claimed the 100 hurdles (15.46) and the 400 hurdles (1:05), while Marlborough's Ava Van Buskirk won the 400 (59.14) and was second in the triple jump (34-2) and fourth in the 200 (26.59). Panthers teammate Abby Hennessy won the shot put, while Nipmuc's Bella Cotter took the discus (93-6) and Tantasqua's Keoni Savoie won the 100 (12.32).

District E Division 2 Class Championship: Avery Glidden took the 400 hurdles (1:05.93), Emma Wierenga was the champ in the 800 (2:24.88) and Emily Flagg won the 2 mile (12:04.39) as Whitinsville Christian narrowly topped Littleton, Ayer-Shirley and Lunenburg for the win at Ayer-Shirley Regional.

The Crusaders recorded 88.5 points, while the Tigers had 83 and Panthers notched 82.5 and Blue Knights finished with 79. Uxbridge was fifth with 58 points.

Whitinsville Christian's Kira Simoncini was second in the 100 and Abby Flagg was second in the mile. Emily Dill, Wierenga, Abby Flagg and Sophia Dill also won the 3,200 relay (10:22.50).

Uxbridge's Kathryn Cahill won the 100 hurdles (15.51) and the triple jump (35-5.75) and was second in the 400 hurdles (1:09.28), while teammate Kendall Gilmore won the 400 (1:00.46) and the long jump (17-1.75) for the Spartans.

Littleton's Norah Kobaly topped the field in the javelin (school record throw of 133-6) and was second in the discus (89-7), while senior teammate Charly Painter won the pole vault (school record leap of 9-6) and Alexandra Silks was third in the shot put.

Lunenburg's Carli Stanford was tops in the 200 (26.32) and was second in the long jump and third in the 100.

St. Paul's Oprah Danso won the 100 (12.40), Murdock's Avery Murphy won the mile (5:27.04), Tyngsborough's Paige Patenaude won the discus (89-11), AMSA's Grace Bleakney took the shot put (32-8) and Narragansett's Ashlyn Duplesis won the high jump (5-2).

Ayer-Shirley took a pair of relays, as Jordan Kosakowski, Ava Murphy, Chandra Eli-Johnson and Destanee Soba won the 400 relay (51.73) and Kosakowski teamed with Isabel Bresnahan, Elizabeth Cruz and Emily Churchill to win the 1,600 relay (4:15.71).

Boys' track

District E Division 1 Class Championship: Algonquin's Christopher Kardos won the mile (4:33.84), Miles Lipka was tops in the 400 hurdles (57.14) and Stephen White claimed the 2 mile crown (10:01.13) to help the Titans take the team title at North Middlesex.

Algonquin posted 115.50 points to take the championship, topping Westborough (94) and Shrewsbury (88) for the honors. Worcester Tech was fourth with 81 points, while Grafton (43.50) edged Nashoba (42) for the fifth spot.

The Titans topped themselves in multiple events, as White bested classmate Aiden Ruiz in the 2 mile, Kardos (4:33.84) edged classmate Joseph Lamburn (4:36.14) for the win in the mile by just over three seconds and Lipka held off junior teammate Yates Campbell for the win in the 400 hurdles.

Westborough's Alan Nguyen shined at another big meet for the Rangers, taking the 110 hurdles (15.02) and the pole vault (12-0) and finishing second in the long jump (21-0.50).

Athletes winning titles in the field events included Leominster's Ricky Encarnacion, who won the triple jump (43-8.75), while Marlborough's Parker Rogers won the discus (143-5), Oakmont's Travis Rusak won the javelin (151-2), Fitchburg's Stephen Bate won the long jump (21-1.50), Nashoba's Sawyer O'Riorden won the high jump (6-0) and North Middlesex's Cedrik Phan claimed the shot put (48-6).

Quabbin's William Hood took the 400 title (50.53), while Grafton's Aditya Kaki won the 100 (11.15) and Worcester Tech's Michael Gyimah won the 22.58. Gyimah also shared a relay title, as the Eagles' Christian Agyekum, Juleein Nicolas, Gyimah and Michael Mireku won the 400 relay (44.79), while teammates Dereck Leon, Adam Amadou, Gabriel Palomeque Jara and Cyprian Ojatabu were tops in the 1,600 relay (3:34.09).

Shrewsbury's Niko Manolakos won the 800 (2:03.97) and anchored the winning 3,200 relay team with Adam Boulay, Jonathan Shan and Declan Daley (8:41.24).

District E Division 2 Class Championship: Littleton's Bona Bradshaw won the 800 (1:58.27) and the 2 mile (10:03.50), while Tyler Castillo won the 100 (school record time of 10.96), Mubeshire Bradshaw took the pole vault (12-7) and Timothy Rank claimed the mile (4:29.68) as the Tigers cruised to the team title with 94 points at Ayer-Shirley Regional.

Rank was also third in the 800 and the pole vault for Littleton, while Paul Neary was third in the 200 and Niall Copp was third in the triple jump.

Parker Charter took second with 73 points, as Theo Puterbaugh won the discus (156-8) and the shot put (60-0), Brandon Ciccolini won the 200 (23.05) and was third in the 100 and the long jump.

Henry Jacobson was also second in the 2 mile and teammate Ethan Dangel was second in the discus for the Panthers.

Bromfield was third with 56.5 points, as the foursome of Samuel Secor, Christian Johannesen, Liam Kemeza and Jack Stahl won the 3,200 relay in 8:53.15. Stahl was also tops in the 400, while Colin Harte took second in the 100 and the 200 for the Trojans. Secor was second in the 800 and teammate Christopher Demetros was second in the pole vault.

Quaboag's Owen Stevens also was a double winner, as the junior claimed the high jump (6-2) and the long jump (21-9.25).

Other winners included Ayer-Shirley's Jacob Kalgren (110 hurdles, 14.97), Douglas's Luke Lightbown (400 hurdles, 1:00.44), Lunenburg's Benjamin Bartow (javelin, 148-0) and Tyngsborough's Christian Riley (triple jump, 40-0.5).

AMSA's 400 relay team of Ryan Woodsmall, Joshua Thomas, Marcos Arellano and Malachie Brunache (46.15) also finished first.

MSTCA Coaches Invitational: Junior Antonio Wiafe topped the field in the long jump (6-0), while senior teammate Lucas Carvalho was second in the 800 (1:57.22) as St. John's shined at Norton High School.

Wiafe also teamed with Ron Burton, Chris Senecal and Emmanuel Mahoney to place third in the 400 relay (44.45).

Mahoney was also fourth in the 100 (11.21).
