High school swimming roundup: Seabreeze places 5th at state championships

The Seabreeze Sandcrabs grabbed fifth place in the boys and girls standings at the Class 2A state meet Friday.

At Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training in Ocala, the girls posted 122 points and the boys had 112. The winners, the Academy of the Holy Names and Bishop Kenny, finished with 316 and 236.5, respectively.

The Sandcrabs tallied four top-five finishes in girls events. As a freshman, Alexis O’Keefe placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.66) and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.88). Mackenzie O’Keefe took fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.84 seconds.

Both contributed on the 200-yard freestyle relay team, along with Addie Smurdon and Laurel Carson. As a group, they ranked fourth with a time of 1:40.00.

Seabreeze also collected four top-five finishes in boys events. Cole Conlan was involved in three. He was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly (50.14) and placed fourth in 100-yard backstroke (51.85). Also in the 100-yard backstroke, Martin Montalvo took second with a time of 51.66.

Conlan and Montalvo joined forces with Kai McMeeking and Tyler Smith to capture fifth place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.22).

1A state meet

Father Lopez placed 23rd in the girls standings with 21 points at the Class 1A state meet Saturday at FAST.

Nelanee Fulton secured her first state medal with a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:07.66). Zoee Fulton ranked 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.45) and 200-yard IM (2:11.55) for the Green Wave's next highest finishes.

Region 2-3A

New Smyrna Beach’s boys and girls teams placed 10th at the Region 2-3A meet Friday at the Long Center in Clearwater.

The girls finished with 94 points and the boys with 81.

In the girls 100-yard breaststroke, Annie Brock recorded a time of 1:13.99, good for fifth. Kymbal Smith added a sixth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (6:01.58).

Drew Dyatt put up New Smyrna Beach’s best ranks in boys events. He was the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle (22.40) and 100-yard freestyle (48.63).

The 3A state meet is scheduled for Saturday at FAST.

Region 1-3A

Matanzas placed 20th on the boys and girls leaderboards at the Region 1-3A meet Tuesday at Morcom Aquatics Center.

The Pirates’s best finish of the day came in the boys 200-yard freestyle relay. Sam Peters, Leo Peters, Oliver Morris and Theordore Vanderbilt teamed up for 12th in 1:35.20.

Karolina Jaronis was 13th in the 100-yard freestyle (56.64).
