High school soccer roundup: Dalton begins season by drubbing defending Alabama state champ; Russell scores 7 goals in Christian Heritage win

Feb. 9—Boys Dalton 7, Fort Payne 1

Dalton (1-0) opened its search for an eighth state championship by drubbing a defending Alabama state champion.

The Catamounts defeated Fort Payne, the defending Class 6A Alabama state champion, 7-1 Friday night in an invitational event played in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.

Angel Salaises, David Saldana and Jose Tapia each had a pair of goals. Francisco Torres had one. Saldana, Salaises, Ivan Rodríguez, Rigo Torres and Salvador Martinez picked up assists.

Dalton plays again in the event today.

Christian Heritage 10, Temple 4

Carson Russell piled up seven goals as Christian Heritage (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss with a 10-4 win over Temple (0-2) on Friday.

Jose Ojeda added a hat trick, scoring the other three Lion goals. Ojeda, Evan Coulter and Luis Salinas each picked up an assist.

Christian Heritage next plays at Ringgold's Heritage on Feb. 20.

Dalton Academy 4, Heritage 1

Dalton Academy (1-0) opened its season with a 4-1 victory over Heritage (1-1) Friday.

The Pumas play at Murray County on Monday at 7 p.m.

North Murray 10, Rockmart 0

North Murray (2-0) piled up 10 goals in the first half alone to force an early end to a 10-0 victory over Rockmart (1-1) Friday.

Landon Figueroa had a trio of goals. Sergio Miranda had two goals, as did Juan Pablo. Aven Cameron, Rey De Leon and Henry Pablo each had one. Juan Pablo picked up three assists, while Juan Martinez, De Leon and Cameron each had one.

North Murray keeper Josue Rodriguez had one save and preserved a shutout.

North Murray plays Fannin County at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Meadowcreek 3, Southeast Whitfield 1

Southeast Whitfield (0-2) dropped to Meadowcreek (2-1) 3-1 on Friday.

After an 0-2 start, Southeast will look for its first win against Berkmar today at 4 p.m.

Girls Southeast Whitfield 9, Meadowcreek 0

Southeast Whitfield (2-0) shut out Meadowcreek (0-2) 9-0 Friday night.

Noely Hurtado, Mayah Camacho, Michelle Morales and Jaslyn Rios each scored two goals.

Southeast plays at Rome on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

North Murray 2, Rockmart 0

North Murray (2-0) downed Rockmart (1-1) 2-0 Friday night.

The Lady Mountaineers play Fannin County at home on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Kennesaw Mountain 2, Dalton 0

Dalton (0-1) dropped its season opener to Kennesaw Mountain (2-0) 2-0 Friday night.

Kennesaw Mountain went up 1-0 at the half. Dalton found several scoring chances in the second half, but the Kennesaw Mountain keeper kept Dalton out of the net and preserved a shutout.

Dalton keeper America Quintero stopped a Kennesaw Mountain penalty kick in the second half, but a late goal made it 2-0.

Dalton plays at Allatoona at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

North Paulding 3, Northwest Whitfield 0

Northwest Whitfield (1-1) fell 3-0 against North Paulding (2-0-1) Friday night.

The Lady Bruins play at Coahulla Creek Thursday at 5 p.m.

Temple 10, Christian Hertiage 0

Christian Heritage (0-1) fell 10-0 against Temple (1-1) on Friday.

The Lady Lions next play at Murray County on Feb. 22.
