HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Upper Cape girls lacrosse makes history with win over Bourne

For the first time in program history, the Upper Cape girls lacrosse team defeated Bourne as they won 14-3 on Monday. Adryanna Turner led the way with six goals, Caitlin Greeley followed up with three goals, and Emma Hanoian, Alaina Hines, Thea Haupt and Lauren Cox each added a goal for Upper Cape (1-0). Mary King anchored the defense with five saves in her debut as goalie, while Emma Hanoian and Hayley King also played well on defense for the Rams.

In other high school action:

Nauset 9, St. John Paul II 8: Sienna Reeves and Julia Kipperman each had a hat trick for the Warriors (2-0) win over the Lions (0-1). Coral Punch added two goals, Laurel Ricard chipped in another goal, and Sophia Boucher led the defense with 15 saves in net.

Sandwich 10, Scituate 7: The Lady Knights (1-0) won their season opener. Kyla Darmon (three goals, one assist), Kolbie Darmon (two goals, two assists), Quinn Anderson (two goals, one assist), and Avery Cobban (one goals, one assist) all contributed on offense, while Abi Kinney and Elisabeth Stutzman each scored a goal for Sandwich.

Barnstable 12, Pembroke 6: The Red Hawks (1-0) started their season with a win. Shelby Locascio (three assists) and Claire Kayajan each scored three times, Alyssa McEneaney (two goals, one assist), Emelie Jonsson (two goals, 13 draw controls), and Carly Steenstra and Chloe Egan (one goal, one assist each) all contributed on offense for Barnstable. Goalie Morgan Muellerhad 10 saves in goal, while McEneaney, Egan, and Giovanna Detoldeo all had three ground balls.

Boys Lacrosse

Plymouth South 9, Barnstable 6: The Red Hawks (0-1) came up short in their season opener. Doug Carr led the way with three goals and one assist. Ryan Woeller (one goal, one assist), Ryan O’Donnell (two assists), and Kyle Cogswell (one goal) and Aiden Kundel (one goal) all contributed on offense.

Blue Hills 12, Upper Cape 3: The Rams (0-1) fell in their first game of the season. Goals were from midfielder Mikhalis Kalkanis, and defensemen Liam Barton and Julian Balbeuna.

Westport 9, Cape Tech 3: The Crusaders (0-1) lost in their season opener.

Softball

Monomoy 16, Sandwich 11: Hailey Lanciani led the way for the Sharks (1-0) as she went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Maddie Brown led the Lady Knights (0-1) as she went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Mia Consalvi finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored, Bella Vaudo ended 3-for-3 and Jenna Fay went 1-for4 with two RBIs for Sandwich.

Dennis-Yarmouth 29, St. John Paul II 4: Savannah Azoff drove in seven runs (home rune, double and triple) on three hits to lead the Dolphins (1-0) past the Lions (0-1). Azoff also earned the win on the mound as she struck out nine and surrendered five hits.

Pasty Newell, Charleigh Hicks, Lily Leandre, Makenna Garcia, Alexa Barboza, Shae McSharry, Newell and Leandre each contributed RBIs for D-Y. The Dolphins had 20 hits total as McSharry went 4-6 at the plate, and Leandre, Alexa Buron, Barboza, Azoff, and Hicks each collected multiple hits.

Nauset 12, Nantucket 7:The Warriors had the lead in the 5th inning, but the game was suspended. They will finish play on May 20 when Nauset hosts Nantucket.

Baseball

Upper Cape 4, Southeastern 1:The Rams (1-0) started their season with a road victory. Tyler Kutil pitched six innings and allowed one run, four hits, and stuck out 11 with one walk. Devin Shultze pitched a perfect seventh inning and struck out two. Kutil added a triple, a walk and a run scored, while Harrison Gargan, Asher Graff, Patrick Acord and Nate Smith led the Rams offense.

Barnstable 5, New Bedford 1: Sladen Johnson pitched a complete game as he struck out 10 batters along the way for the Red Hawks (1-0) season opener victory.

Nauset 9, Bristol Plymouth 6: The Warriors (0-1) overcame a 4-1 deficit to win their first game of the season and give head coach Brett Labonte his first career win at the helm.

Jake Doherty pitched 4.1 innings of relief and allowed one run for the win, while Seamus Mahoney had the save for Nauset. Ryan O’Keefe had the start and pitched 1.2 innings, and allowed four unearned runs. He later delivered an RBI single late in the game that extended the lead.

James Breda went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, which included a bases clearing double in the 5th inning to take the lead. Devin Farrell was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Monomoy 10, Cape Tech 0: The Sharks (1-0) won their home season opener with a win over the Crusaders (0-1). Finn Hyora pitched a complete game shutout for Monomoy, needing only 61 pitches over six innings.

Owen Lavin (two hits), Chace Robbins (two hits) and Lincoln Sanford (three runs scored) paced the balanced offense for Monomoy. The Sharks scored four runs in the 2nd inning and four more in the 4th inning.

Boys Tennis

Nantucket 3, Monomoy 2: The Whalers (1-0) picked up the win over the Vineyarders (0-1) for the season opener.Nik Kristen defeated Gavin McDonnell (6-7(5-7), 6-1, 6-3) in second singles for Nantucket. Hawkin Edwardes and Soren Edwardes defeated Ethan Seufert and Connor Francis (7-6 (7-5), 6-3) in first doubles, while Sam Illner and Fuller Howard beat Blake Noonan and Liam Jordan (6-4, 6-7(4-7), 6-1) in second doubles.

Ryan Casey defeated Boyan Kalpazanov in first singles 6-1, 6-3, while Roman Pavluchenko defeated Henry Kalawatha in third singles (5-7, 6-0, 6-1) for Monomoy.

Nauset 4, Falmouth 1: The Warriors (1-0) started the season with a win over the Clippers (1-0). Lucas Wilson beat Jack Boardsley (6-0, 6-3) in second singles, while Salvi Cacciola beat Sam Collins in third singles for Nauset. Tom Foley and Joey Smith won first doubles (6-3, 6-1) over Jacob Faidell and Henry Stoermer, and Will Murphy and Soren Jones defeated Aidan Corey and Sebastian Verslycke in second doubles (6-2, 6-0). Quintin Hefferan beat Jason White in first singles (1-6, 7-5, 10-5) for Falmouth.

Bourne 4, Wareham 1: The Canalmen (1-0) picked up their home and season opener win.

Dennis-Yarmouth 5, St. John Paul II 0: The Dolphins (1-0) swept the Lions (0-1) in the season opener.

Girls Tennis

Monomoy 3, Nantucket 1: The Sharks (1-0) won the season opener over the Whalers (0-1). Tatiana Malone defeated Joan Harris (6-2 6-1, first singles), Lilly Gould beat Lauren Cutone (6-0 6-2, second singles), and Hanadi Rezk beat Chloe Marrerro (6-2 6-3, third singles) for the Monomoy singles sweep. Madison Mahfouz and Sophia Sarabia won the first set against Sutton Lebrecht and Sara Dusealt 7-6 (7) but there was no time left to finish the set.

Hannah Geradi and Lily Chibnik beat Darcy Addison and Karina Khalsa in first doubles (7-6 (2) 6-3) for Nantucket.

Wareham 4, Bourne 1: Addie Dion and Maeve MacLachlan won second doubles (6-2, 7-6 (10-8)) over Nevaen Smith and Juliana Statcus for the Canalmen (0-1).

St. John Paul II 5, Martha’s Vineyard 0: The Lions (1-0) swept the Vineyarders (0-1) in the season opener. Lily Wagner beat Alaina Dubin in first singles (6-4, 6-0), while Ava Powell and Grace Walker defeated Sophia Balsas-Fuentes and Clementine Zeender (6-3, 6-3) in first doubles for JPII.

Nauset 3, Falmouth 2: The Warriors (1-0) started their season with a victory over the Clippers (0-1). Nicole Boyce defeated Genevieve Maranchie in first singles, (7-5, 3-6, 6-2), while Sophia Votteler defeated Gayatri Chaturvedi in third singles (6-1, 6-1) for Nauset. Faye Adams and Elexa Malouin teamed up to beat Marcella DePavla and Alexis Christian in first doubles (6-4).

Maia Ledwell defeated Anjali O'Brien (6-3, 6-1) in second singles, while Sadie Inman and Phoebe Hodgson teamed up to beat Chloe Hand and Callie Murphy (6-4) for Falmouth.

Boys Volleyball

Barnstable 3, St. John Paul II 0: The Red Hawks (1-0) swept the Lions (0-1) in straight sets (25-8, 25-9, 25-5). Gabriel Paiva had six receptions and four digs, while Elie Youseff finished with 17 receptions and four digs for JPII.
