High School Roundup: Scores and recaps from Wednesday's games and meets

BOYS BASKETBALL

Division I

Hendricken 73, Central 59

The Hawks defense showed up when it mattered most, stifling the Knights in the second half of this Division I clash. Central ran out to 42-32 lead at the break, but only scored 17 points the rest of the way. Hendricken's James Caldarella scored a game-high 25 points (with five 3's), Dylan Lynch scored 20 and Jakob Reyes added 10 in the win. For Central, Elijah Reed netted a team-best 14 points and Lestor Rodriguez added 13. The win lifts to Hawks to 9-2, Central slips to 3-8.

Mt. Pleasant 46, Cranston East 41

Jayden Anson and Domingo Qualls combined to score 25 points paving the way for the Kilties victory over the Thunderbolt. Andrew topped the Cranston East in points with 15 and teammates Noah Barros and Al Kesse had 9 had 8 points, respectively, in the loss.

Westerly 65, East Providence 62

Jess Samo had quite a night as he poured in 24 points, including a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, as the Bulldogs got by East Providence. Westerly also had strong outings from Lucas Pennell who knocked down 16 points and Romello Hamlin added a dozen more. The Townies, got solid performances in defeate from Kenaz Ochgwu, who put up 20 points, Christian Torres with 12 points and Levi Jacobs with 11 points.

Portsmouth 68, Smithfield 64

Portsmouth won the battle of two teams in the middle of the pack in Division 1. The Patriots improved to 9-5 overall and 7-5 in the division, while the Sentinels dropped to 5-7 overall and 4-6 in the division. Adam Conheeny led all scorers with 26 points for Portsmouth. Corey Blakely kept pace with 23 for Smithfield. Will Alves had 12 points and Kyle Bielawa added 11 for the Patriots. Shaun Dwyer scored 16 for the Sentinels. Trailing by 6 points at the half, Portsmouth outscored Smithfield 34-26 in the second half.

Division II

Burrillville 61, Toll Gate 56

Logan Gelinas put together a solid performance with 23 points, 13 rebounds, 4 treys and five assists and teammate Nolan Serafin found the range for 19 more points helping the Broncos escape with a victory a pesky Toll Gate team. Dylan Perreault scored 21 for the Titans and teammate Brayden Healey had 13 points in the loss.

Middletown 50, Pilgrim 44

The Islanders' 1-2 punch of Patrick Cranson (22 points) and Roberto Figueras (16) was too powerful for the Patriots to handle. The teams were knotted at 26 at the break, but Middletown (4-6) used a strong third quarter to take the lead, and never looked back. For Pilgrim (6-4), Dylan Vale scored a game-high 15 points and Jack Cirelli added 10 in the loss.

Cranston West 67, Chariho 42

Jaymien Aponte rifled in 20 points and teammate Kennedy Arias added 8 more as the Falcons rolled to victory over the Chargers. Owen Apice had 16 points for Chariho in the loss and teammate Mason Cabida scored 14.

Lincoln 63, Rogers 58

Wayne McNamara led the way for Lincoln as the Lions remained undefeated. The senior guard scored 27 points with a 3-pointer and sank 8 free throws. He was assisted by Camden DiChiara, who scored 17, and Josh Bergeron, who had 11. Miles Ventura scored 13 for Rogers and Travis Burroughs added 12 points for the Vikings. Lincoln improved to 13-0 overall and 9-0 in the division. Rogers fell to 10-4 and 8-3.

Sra 67, Johnston 62 (OT)

Jayden Matos led the Saints (10-0) with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Zerek Johnson added 17 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists with 5 points coming in overtime. Khamari Brown had 11 points in the win. For Johnston (9-2), Jayden Testa had 24 and Branden Testa had 23 in the loss.

Division III

West Warwick 61, Achievement First 33

Greg Benton reached into his magic bag and made 19 points appear as the Wizards upended Achievement First in the a D-III encounter. Owen Stearns added 10 points for WW in win and teammate Jayden Hall was good for 8 more. For AF, Jason Mayancela, and Fred Browne each scored 8 points and Devin Burns added 7 points in the loss.

Mount St. Charles 59, Prout 49

The Mounties used a balance offensive attack, with four players reaching double-figures, to down the Crusaders, and punch their ticket to the postseason. Tyler Dias scored a team-high 14 points (with four 3's), Manny Adeyeye and Michael Hebert each scored 11 and Michael Rizoli added 10 in the MSC (6-5) victory. For Prout (4-6), Lawson O'Hearn had a team-high 14 points, and Charlie Horne added 12 points.

North Smithfield 64, EWG 54

Al Viera-Dones scored 18 points, Tyson Green scored 13 and Aiden Bienvenue and Anthony Paiva each scored 9 points in the Northmen's victory. EWG's Dylan Carr scored a game-high 21 points.

Classical 57, Westerly 35

It was an impressive showing for the Purple on Wednesday. Classical won the 200 free (Cornac Hughes, 2:07.80), 200 IM (George Groves, 2:07.69), 50 free (Alex Fubaro, 23:87), 100 fly (Groves, 56:06), 100 free (Fubaro, 56.92) and 500 free (Damien Figuel-Kossyeev, 5:42.01), 100 breast (Figuel-Kossyeevm 1:10.04) and 100 back (Lukas Fritsch, 1:02.53). Classical also took the 400 free relay (3:61.48) and the 200 medley relay (1:46.81). For the Bulldogs, Sam Lorello won the 100 back.

Classical 49, Westerly 37

Vivien Wienert won the 200 free (2:04.15), the 100 fly (1:02.11) was the lead swimmer in the winning 200 medley relay (7:06.27). Purple teammates Izenia Gutterrez won the 200 IM (2:47.65) and Amayah Brooks won the 100 free, and both took part in the 200 medley relay. For the Bulldogs, Peyton Pietraszka won the 50 free (28:89) and was part of the winning 200 free relay (1:57.93).
