High School Roundup: Scores and recaps from Wednesday night's basketball games

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Game of the Night

Mya Jiminez needed a big night to help get the Cranston East girls basketball team a win — but that’s not all she was chasing.

Needing 20 points to reach 1,000 for her career, Jiminez took over the first half against East Greenwich and in the third quarter, rebounded her own miss and scored on a layup that got her the milestone as the Thunderbolts took care of business in a 54-41 win.

The game was close after the first quarter, but Cranston East’s 13-9 lead soon grew thanks in part to a 17-4 second-quarter run that put it up 30-13 at halftime.

After scoring 15 points in the first half, it was only a matter of time before Jiminez got her big basket. With 3:43 left to play Jiminez drove from the right wing to the basket and missed her initial offering. She followed her shot, beat two Avengers to the rebound and went back up for a layup and her 1,000th career point. The game was stopped and her teammates as well as classmates mobbed her on the court.

Jiminez finished her night with 22 points. Samantha Vernancia came through with 11, hitting two 3-pointers and getting her other bucket all in the final two quarters. Jayna Gunderway added eight in the win.

Cat Neville led East Greenwich with 14 points and Sophia Schwarzbach scored eight.
