High School Roundup: Lenawee County sports from Jan. 2-6

Winter break is winding down for schools, if they haven't finished already, and Lenawee County high school sports slowly easy back into a regular schedule.

Here's what's going on in the first week of 2024:

TUESDAY

Boys Basketball

Britton Deerfield 63, Hudson 34 

BRITTON — The Patriots improved to 9-0 with the non-league victory over the Tigers.

Britton Deerfield got a great jump start, leading 8-0 early on. Hudson closed the gap to 8-5, but Ryan Good and Braydon Shiels hit back-to-back 3-pointers for an 18-9 lead, and the lead kept building from there.

Owen Plum sank a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to put the Patriots up 35-19 at the break. BD then held the Tigers to three third-quarter points.

Logan Shiels scored 15, Colin Johnson controlled the inside for 14 points and Good finished with 10 for the Patriots.

Hudson (1-7) got 10 points from Drew Engle-Wendt, who made three of the seven 3-pointers made by the Tigers on the night. KJ Walker had a solid game with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Girls Basketball

Springport 66, Hudson 33 

SPRINGPORT — Dinah Horwath swished five triples and scored 16 points for Hudson in the non-league loss.

Taylor Kopin added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals. Teagan Arredondo had six assists for Hudson, which moved to 2-3 on the season.

Summerfield 54, Onsted 48 

PETERSBURG — Summerfield halted a four-game losing streak at the expense of the Wildcats.

Karlie Kimerer had a career night with 26 points, six rebounds and four assists for Onsted (4-4). JayElle Christian added seven rebounds.

Gymnastics

Tecumseh at Adrian

ADRIAN — The Tecumseh co-op team won a tight dual with rival Adrian, 123.925-122.20 while the Maples' B-Team scored 95.650.

Leading Tecumseh was Madi Rentfro as she won the all-around with a score of 34.75 while taking the floor (9.175), beam (9.05) and bars (8.025).

Adrian's Haylee Vore won the vault (8.75) and took third in the all-around (31.75) while Reese Beauleaux was second in the all-around (33.50) and Tecumseh's Olivia Atkin was fourth (30.60).

Boys Basketball

Tecumseh 66, Airport 53 

CARLETON — Tecumseh tuned up for the start of SEC-White play with a road win at Airport.

Tecumseh (7-1) got four 3-pointers and 22 points from Ryan Barrie and 20 from Ryan Mossburg. Tecumseh made 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to hang on to the lead when Airport made its comeback attempt.

“Great road win for our ball club,” Tecumseh coach Jamison Webster said. “I thought the defensive focus and intensity we came out with set the tone for the game. Executed well in the second half to pull away.”

Girls Basketball

Addison 40, Union City 13 

UNION CITY — Addison had little trouble in gathering win No. 3 on the season.

Kaylie Trumble had a big game with 14 points, five steals, four rebounds and four assists for the 3-4 Panthers. Laci Patterson chipped in with 10 points.

Pittsford 44, Britton Deerfield 31 

BRITTON — The Patriots are still looking for their first victory after falling to the Wildcats in their first game back from Christmas break.

BD was only down one through the first quarter and three at the half, but the visitors pulled away in the second half.

Lily Watson and Kurina Dotson scored 9 points each for 0-7 BD.

Wrestling

Clinton 77, Hanover Horton 0

CLINTON — The Division 3 fifth-ranked Redwolves shut out the Comets in their final home dual for the regular season.

The dual started with three-straight voids awarded to Nate Arntz (106 pounds), Zach Taylor (113) and Joe Hodges (120) before Braylon Long (126) won by a tech fall. Connor Younts (132) won by void as well before Maurice Ames (138) got a pin, and Dylan Badge (144) got a decision before Aiden Johnson (150) won by a void.

Bryce Randolph (165) and Hamza Rafferty (285) won by voids while Cliff Jones (157), Landon Lakatos (175) and Wyatt Hicks (215) all had pins while John Keibler (190) won by a decision.

THURSDAY

Boys Basketball

Lenawee Christian 76, Britton Deerfield 66

ADRIAN — The Cougars got hot early in the fourth quarter from beyond the 3-point arch as they pulled away to hand Britton Deerfield its first loss of the season in a big TCC showdown.

Daniel Scrupsky led the effort from deep for LCS (7-2, 2-1 TCC) as he hit five of a season-high 13 for the Cougars to put up 15 points while Jaxon Salenbien had 22, Brandon Summer had 18 and Aidan Kaulins added 16.

LCS led 51-50 going into the fourth where the Cougars began the final frame with four-straight 3-pointers.

Ryan Good had 24 points with four 3-pointers to lead the Patriots (9-1, 2-1 TCC) while Colin Johnson had 15 and Logan Shiels had 13.

Sand Creek 70, Morenci 45

MORENCI — Rory Eack had a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds for the Aggies, who also got 24 points from Trevor Opel.

Sand Creek is 4-3 while Morenci is 1-8.

Shamus Alcock scored 18, and Jonas Castillo had 10 for the Bulldogs.

Girls Basketball

Blissfield 63, Ida 35

IDA — The Royals went on the road and jumped out to a 23-7 lead after the first quarter in the LCAA matchup.

June Miller hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Avery Collins had 12 points, eight assists and five steals while Leigh Wyman had nine points and five steals. Evie Brown pulled down 10 rebounds, and Peyton Tennant had 12 boards.

Blissfield is 5-1 and 3-0 in the LCAA.

Madison 53, Dundee 32

DUNDEE — Madison has its second four-game win streak of the season after winning at Dundee.

Reigning Lenawee County Player of the Week Nevaeh Parish and Jaeda Parish each scored 14 for the Trojans (8-1, 3-0 LCAA), who connected on six 3-pointers on the game.

The Trojan defense held Dundee to three first-quarter points while jumping out to a 14-3 lead after eight minutes and then outscored the Vikings 20-7 in the third quarter to seal the game.

Clinton 47, Hudson 34

CLINTON — Kaylie Livingston and Zoey Sierer combined for 26 points as Hudson had two big middle quarters and beat the Tigers in LCAA play.

Livingston and Sierer scored 13 points each for Clinton (4-3, 1-2 LCAA).

Hudson (2-4, 1-2 LCAA) was led by Teagan Arredondo, who finished with 11 points. Dinah Horwath had five rebounds, and Sam French had four steals.

Boys Swimming

Adrian 112, Coldwater 64

ADRIAN — The Division 3 fifth-ranked Maples began the new year with a win and a school pool record.

The 200-yard freestyle team of Kade Opsal, Hadyn Gould, Brayden Kilpatrick and London Rising set the home record to 1:29.93 to take first in the event.

Ian Baker and Maddox Betz joined Kilpatrick and Rising to win the 200 medley relay (1:49.25) while Noah Judson joined Gould, Opsal and Baker to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.50).

Gould also won the 50 freestyle (22.14) and 100 backstroke (53.09) while Rising won the 200 IM (2:03.06) and the 500 freestyle (4:55.99) and Opsal won the 200 freestyle (1:52.83). Betz won the diving event (127.45), Kilpatrick won the 100 butterfly (59.98), Judson won the 100 freestyle (54.87) and Baker won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.67).

FRIDAY

Boys Basketball

Clinton 53, Hudson 45

HUDSON — The Redwolves had a slow start but battled back to get the LCAA road win against the Tigers.

Clinton (4-5, 2-1 LCAA) trailed Hudson (1-8, 0-4 LCAA) 17-9 after the first before flipping the script in the second quarter to take a 27-26 lead into the half. The Tigers re-took the lead in the third and led 38-36 going into the fourth, where Clinton held a 17-7 advantage.

Jalen Stelzer led the Redwolves with 18 points, with 11 in the second quarter, while Calen Keith had 13 points and Andy Fair and Eli Turner each had 10.

Isaac St. John had 18 points with five 3-pointers while Jackson Jones had 13.

Sand Creek 81, North Adams Jerome 23

SAND CREEK — The Aggies were hot early and never looked back as they blew out North Adams Jerome in a non-conference game.

Sand Creek (5-3) put up 36 points in the first quarter and led 61-16 at the half.

Rory Eack had 26 points, 10 steals and seven rebounds while Trevor Opel had 23 points and eight rebounds. Eack had 18 points in the first quarter alone while Opel had 14.

Tecumseh 56, Columbia Central 39

TECUMSEH — Tecumseh handed the Golden Eagles their first loss of the season while it improved to 8-1 behind a strong fourth quarter.

Tecumseh led 14-12 after the first and 31-23 at the half before taking a 40-34 advantage into the fourth where it outscored Columbia Central 16-5 in the final eight minutes.

Ryan Mossburg had 19 points, five rebounds and four assists while Tyler Clement had 17 points and five rebounds and Lenawee County Player of the Week Ryan Barrie added 11 points and four assists.

Adrian 65, Arbor Prep 62

YPSILANTI — The Maples improved to 8-1 behind double-doubles from Stevie Elam and Sean Parker.

Adrian trailed by 10 after three when the defense locked down the Gators to get back into the game and take the lead. Parker hit two key free throws late to give him 23 points to go with 13 rebounds while Elam had 28 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Dundee 47, Madison 41

MADISON TWP. — The Trojans battled with LCAA unbeaten Dundee but came up short.

Madison (3-6, 0-4 LCAA) trailed 26-20 at the half before playing even in the second half.

Antonio Nieto, the final Lenawee County Boys Basketball Player of the Week for 2023, had 17 points while Bryce Jordan had eight points, three rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Ida 54, Blissfield 51 

IDA — Chet Meyer poured in a career-high 26 points for the Royals, who hadn’t played since Dec. 18.

The Royals (4-4, 2-2 LCAA) also got 12 points from Gabe Schnoor.

Girls Basketball

Lenawee Christian 52, Britton Deerfield 37 

ADRIAN — Two Cougars had double-doubles as Lenawee Christian pulled away with a big second half.

Hannah Baker had 16 points and 11 rebounds while Callie Anderson had 14 points and 12 boards for LCS (4-3, 3-0 TCC). Brynn Davis added nine points and Gabby Bryja hit the offensive glass with five rebounds on that end of the floor.

Alivia Salenbien scored a season-high 17 points while Alayna Salenbien scored 10 points for the Patriots (0-8, 0-3 TCC).

Morenci 36, Sand Creek 13 

MORENCI — The Bulldog defense limited Sand Creek to just four field goals on the night and improved to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in the TCC.

Leah Rorick scored 16 points to lead all scorers. Evelyn Joughin added eight points and Colbie Ekins six for Morenci. Six Aggies scored points, including Carley Allen, who had four. Sand Creek is 1-6 and 0-2 in the TCC.

Tecumseh 55, Columbia Central 33 

TECUMSEH — Tecumseh, playing in front of its home crowd for the second time this season, had an easy time with the Cascades Conference opponent.

Tecumseh jumped out to a 22-3 lead after the first quarter and coasted the rest of the way. The defense limited the Golden Eagles to five two-point field goals.

Lauren Kilbarger did a great job keeping (Hailey) Freshcorn in check,” Tecumseh coach Kristy Zajac said.

Freshcorn formerly played at Onsted, where she set the single-game scoring record.

Chloe Bullinger scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds and four assists. Alli Zajac had 16 points and 12 rebounds while Addi Zajac pulled down 19 rebounds to go with 14 points and five assists.

Wrestling

Kestrel Girls Invite

MONROE — Clinton took third out of 24 teams at the Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central Kestrel Invite with one champion.

The Redwolves had 56.5 points to trail Romeo (72) and Olivet (63) with Faith Blackburn winning 135-pound bracket going 3-0 with three pins. Raven Aldridge took second at 155 going 2-1 with a pin and tech fall.

Hudson had two runners-up with Aubree McClain (100) going 2-1 with a pin while Grace Miller (105) went 2-1 with two pins. Blissfield's Libby White took second at 110 with a pin.

Bowling

Summerfield at Britton Deerfield

TECUMSEH — The Patriots remained unbeaten as they beat Summerfield in a TCC match, 27-3.

BD (5-0, 2-0 TCC) led 10 after the Baker Games while Logan Smith rolled a 211 and Jayden Brooks had a 191.

SATURDAY

Wrestling

Spartan Classic

WARREN — Division 3 fifth-ranked Clinton had a great day, taking first at the Warren Fitzgerald Spartan Classic behind seven tournament champions.

The Redwolves placed 10 into the finals with Braylon Long (126), Connor Younts (132), Dylan Badge (144), Cliff Jones (150), Bryce Randolph (165), Wyatt Hicks (215) and Hamza Raffery (285) all winning their weight classes.

Adrian Duals

ADRIAN — The host Maples won their tournament by going 5-0 with wins against Hanover Horton (76-6), South Lyon East (49-24), Pinckney (71-9), Crestwood (54-21) and Onsted (67-12).

Diego Orozco and Cameron Trevino went 5-0 while Micah Blaker went 4-0 and Khristian Young went 2-0.

Grosse Ile Duals

GROSSE ILE — Madison took the team title at Gross Ile by going 5-0 with wins against Dearborn (63-12), Farmington (54-21), Romulus (72-6), Monroe (40-36) and Salem (60-16).

Jacob Byrd, Malaki Mosher, Lucas Dopp, Paul McClure, Lukas Leonard, Jalonn Borders, Wyatt Dusseau-Garno and Logan Russell all went unbeaten on the day.

DCC Invite

DETROIT — Division 4 top-ranked Hudson traveled to face a challenge field at the Detroit Catholic Central Invite, where the Tigers took seventh.

The Tigers got two runners-up with defending Lenawee County Wrestler of the Year Nicholas Sorrow taking only his second loss in the 120 final off a tiebreaker while Coy Perry (144) went 3-1 with three pins.

Fruitport Invite

FRUITPORT — Addison took sixth at the Fruitport Wrestling Legends Invite with one championship on the day.

The Panthers were led by Joe Clark (175) as he went 3-0 with two pins.

Roosevelt Invite

WYANDOTTE — Tecumseh took fifth overall at the Roosevelt Invite with one runner-up finish.

Carson Fields (126) went 2-1 with a pin to take second.

Hastings Invite

HASTINGS — Zachary Martinez represented Morenci in Hastings, where he took fourth at 132 by going 3-2 with two pins and a major decision.

Competitive Cheer

Blackhawk Invite

LESLIE — Onsted had the top score at Leslie's Blackhawk Invite as the Wildcats posted a 742.48.

Onsted won the upper class division by 9.18 points ahead of Lakewood.

Madison Invite

MADISON TWP. — The host Trojans posted the top score of the day as they won their home meet.

Adrian took third overall.

Boys Basketball

Freeland 47, Onsted 40 

LANSING — Freeland came from three points down in the fourth quarter to knock off Onsted.

Ayden Davis led Onsted with 20 points.

Onsted has dropped two straight and is 5-4 overall.
