High school hoops: West Ottawa falls to No. 2 Rockford in ranked showdown; Dux top Mona

After beating three top-10 teams in the state in the past three weeks, the No. 6 West Ottawa girls basketball team came up short on Tuesday with a 70-54 loss to No. 2 Rockford.

Trailing 14-13 with Gabby Reynolds scoring three points in the first quarter, the Panthers were held to five points in the second quarter of the OK Red defeat.

Reynolds had 23 points, breaking her streak of seven consecutive 30-point games for the Panthers.

Chelsea Overbeek and Taylor Catton each scored 10 points for West Ottawa and Brooke Pedersen had seven.

Grace Lyons had 21 points to lead Rockford.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Zeeland West 65, Mona Shores 55

The Dux won the OK Green showdown behind 24 points from Luke Bakker.

"We did a good job of sharing the ball and making the right play in transition, which led to open shot attempts," Zeeland West coach David Klyn said. "We were controlled and played with a purpose in our halfcourt offense as well."

Holland 61, Wyoming 55

The Dutch won the OK Green battle.

g. Omari Peak led the Dutch with 20 points and Jacob VanHekken had 16.

Hamilton 79, Spring Lake 57

The Hawkeyes scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to pull away and win the OK Blue showdown.

Justin McIllwain had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes.

Londin Cooper had 15 points and Riley VanDerHulst added 11.

Reeths-Puffer 71, Zeeland East 66

The Chix lost the OK Green showdown.

Layne Risdon had 26 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks.

Rockford 63, West Ottawa 40

The Panthers lost the OK Red battle on the road.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Holland Christian 37, Unity Christian 31

The Maroons bounced back after a tough overtime loss the first time they faced the Crusaders.

From the opening tip the Maroons never trailed in the game. Adeylnn Nyhof led Holland Christian with 14 points and Camryn VandenBosch chipped in 12.

Saugatuck 66, North Muskegon 25

The Trailblazers dominated for their 13th consecutive win and are now 18-1 overall.

Miss Basketball nominee Brook Simpson had four consecutive 3-pointers in the second quarter and finished with 22 points. Kennedy Gustafson had 13 points, while Mylah Simpson and Penny Grob each had 13.

"We are really starting to hit our stride on both ends of the floor," Saugatuck coach Kevin Tringali said. "It's great to see so many of our kids scoring, but it is our team defense I am most proud of."

Saugatuck can clinch the SAC Central division title outright with a win over Black River on Friday.

Spring Lake 57, Hamilton 34

The Hawkeyes dropped to 8-11 and 4-9 in the OK Blue with the loss after being outscored 14-5 in the second quarter, then giving up 19 points in the third.

Kaitlyn Geurink led Hamilton with 18 points.

"It was a tough game on the defensive end tonight. In the first quarter Spring Lake got to the rim, which forced us to pack things in a bit more. After that adjustment, they knocked down some outside shots. Looking forward to cleaning some things up and getting back out there on Friday," Hamilton coach Jacquelyn Malloch said.

Mona Shores 26, Zeeland West 22

The Dux lost at home to Mona Shores in a low scoring affair. The Dux were playing from behind all night but took a 21-20 lead in the fourth quarter, but Mona finished the game on a 6-1 run to come out with the victory.

Wyoming 53, Holland 35

Holland celebrated senior Lilly Mendels on Tuesday night in the Dome. The Dutch lost 53-35 but played with determination and hustle to close their home season.

"We wanted to play as hard as possible tonight and show improvement. We wanted to honor Lilly and let her know how much we appreciate her and I think we did that," said Holland coach Dan Telgenhof.

Holland was led in scoring by Hadleigh Hilgert with nine. Olivia Weiss added eight while Alba Rodriguez Lima chipped in with five.

Reeths-Puffer 53, Zeeland East 35

Emily Wierenga had 20 points and 18 rebounds for the Chix in the OK Green defeat.

Lawton 51, Fennville 29

Lila Rosema scored 12 points for the Blackhawks in the SAC defeat.
