High school hoops: Gabby Reynolds scores record 47 points; HC wins in final seconds

Having already passed the 1,500 career point mark, it didn't take West Ottawa's Gabby Reynolds long to pass 1,600.

On Tuesday, Reynolds scored a career-high and school-record 47 points in a 66-34 win over Jenison.

Reynolds had 16 in the first quarter, 11 in the second quarter, 17 in the third quarter and three in the fourth quarter.

Seven other Panthers (13-4, 8-3 OK Red) scored in the OK Red victory.

West Ottawa's defense allowed just 14 points in the second half.

"We played very well defensively in the second half - and Gabby is pretty good," West Ottawa coach Paul Chapman said.

Holland Christian 38, Spring Lake 37

Luke Michmerhuizen scored with eight seconds remaining in the game to give the Maroons the OK Green win.

Holland Christian (11-8) trailed by six with a minute to go.

Michmerhuizen finished with 11 points. Caleb Karsten had eight points.

"Ugly wins are good," Holland Christian coach Brad Jansen said. "We got big defensive minutes from Josh Bruxvoort, Desmond Meyaard and Caden VanHuis."

Unith Christian 65, Hamilton 53

A slow start was crucial as the Hawkeyes were outscored 22-13 in the first quarter.

Hamilton's Justin McIllwain had 23 points and eight rebounds. James Hoffman added 11 points.

TJ Fisher led Unity with 17 points.

Muskegon 79, Zeeland Esat 49

The Chix lost the OK Green battle.

BJ Walker scored 15 points to lead Zeeland East. Will Drnek had 10 points, while Layne Risdon had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Saugatuck 74, Muskegon Heights 50

In the Monday game, the Trailblazers led 19-6 and kept it going to win their fourth straight.

Leading the way for the Trailblazers was junior Carter Miller with 26 points, including six 3-pointers. Senior Russell VandePoel added 17 points.

"Carter was hot tonight," Saugatuck coach Brian Ward said. "He started with a couple of free throws due to a pre-game technical and I think that really helped him find an early rhythm on his shot. His outside scoring helped open things up inside for other guys as well. So a really big night out of him that I hope gives him some confidence moving forward."

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Holland Christian 58, Spring Lake 48

The Maroons battled back and forth all night with the Lakers, but pulled ahead for good in the fourth.

Camryn VandenBosch scored a game-high 18, Brooklyn Phelps chipped in 14 all in the second quarter and Adelynn Nyhof added 13.

The Maroons face rival Hamilton Friday.

Zeeland West 41, Holland 25

The Dux won the OK Green game. Jordyn Klaasen scored 13 points, while Georgia Kuyers had 12 and Maddie McCullough added eight.

Lilly Mendels and Alba Rodriguez Lima had six apiece for Holland while Emma Margaron and Hadleigh Hilgert both had five.

Fennville 42, Comstock 18

The Blackhawks led 20-2 after one quarter and never looked back in the Monday win.

Lila Rosema had 26 points and 15 rebounds. Kyli Bushee added 10 points.

Unity Christian 50, Hamilton 39

The Crusaders scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to pull away in the OK Blue win.

Hamilton's Kaitlyn Geurink scored 23 points, while Haylie Peterman had eight.

"We struggled to defend Unity's Makara and Maleya Obande, who scored 20 and 14 points respectively. They're both very talented so credit to them for how they played tonight," Hamilton coach Jacquelyn Malloch said. "Kaitlyn Geurink was a big matchup problem for Unity. She had 14 in the first half (23 in the game). Kaitlyn did a great job getting open and finishing around the rim."
