High school golf district roundup: Cobb, Hull, Spruce Creek boys claim championships

DAYTONA BEACH — Amelia Cobb walked toward the parking lot at Daytona Beach Golf Club holding a few things Monday afternoon.

Water bottle. Phone. And her second straight individual district championship medal.

She had just completed her dominance of the District 6-2A Tournament, shooting a 1-under-par 70 to defend her crown. In four years of high school golf, the senior has placed second, second, first and first on the district leaderboards.

Her Seabreeze Sandcrabs finished as the runner-up Monday after claiming district titles during each of Cobb’s first three years. Bishop Moore Catholic ran away with the top spot, putting forth a 320 team score.

The top three teams from each district advance to regionals as do the highest finishing three individuals from non-qualifying teams.

“My putting was pretty good,” Cobb said. “I would keep the ball close to the hole, and my drives were pretty good, too.”

Simple, yet effective.

After a bogey on the par-4 third hole, Cobb rebounded and dropped below par with an eagle on the par-5 fourth.

She birdied No. 10 and, following bogeys on No. 13 and No. 16, carded a birdie on the par-4 17th. Cobb ranked six strokes ahead of Bishop Moore Catholic’s Amelia Miller, the runner-up.

Three other Sandcrabs placed in the top 10. Sophomore Jillian Heller was seventh, senior Isablla Reuter was eighth and junior Kailey Annon was 10th.

Seabreeze also hosted the boys’ side of the District 6-2A tournament at Daytona Beach Golf Club Monday.

The Sandcrabs again took second behind Bishop Moore Catholic and its 308. Seabreeze recorded a 317 as a team.

Junior Isaac Baldwin and senior Kyler Crafton led the way, grabbing second and third place, respectively.

With a 3-over-par 74, Baldwin sat one stroke off the individual lead held by Bishop Moore Catholic’s Packy Mokris.

“I putted better than normal,” Baldwin said.

He said he typically tries to avoid looking at the leaderboard during his round. But Monday?

“I was on it all day today,” Baldwin said. “Like, from hole 2.”

Crafton ended his round with a 5-over-par 76.

“I made a lot of good saves, a lot of good par saves,” Crafton said, “and kept myself out of trouble.”
