High School Football Roundup: Austin breezes to win at Gardendale

Sep. 30—GARDENDALE — Gavin Fuqua and Jaxon Potter accounted for two touchdowns each as Austin rolled past Gardendale 38-7 in a non-region game on Friday.

A Hayden Wynn field goal got the Black Bears on the board first before Fuqua's first touchdown, a two-yard run, pushed the Austin lead to 10-0.

Potter hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 17-0 and an 11-yard touchdown catch by Sean Bannister extended Austin's lead to 24-0.

Fuqua's second score, an eight-yard touchdown reception, put Austin's lead at 31-0 before Potter rounded out the Austin scoring with a 42-yard punt return.

Austin (4-2, 1-2 in Class 7A, Region 4 play) returns to region play next week at Grissom.

West Limestone 20, East Limestone 7: Easton Smith rushed 25 times for 147 yards and a pair of touchdowns as West Limestone picked up a win over county foe East Limestone on Friday.

West Limestone quarterback Case Carpenter opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 13-yard touchdown run by Smith pushed the Wildcat lead to 13-0 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Smith scored two yards out in the fourth quarter to give the Wildcats a 20-0 lead that East Limestone couldn't overcome.

Xavier Edwards found the end zone from a yard out late in the fourth quarter to put East Limestone on the board and avoid the shutout. Edwards led the Indians with 132 yards rushing on 26 carries.

West Limestone (4-2, 1-2 in Class 4A, Region 7) travels to Wilson for a region game next week. East Limestone (0-6, 0-3 in Class 5A, Region 8) is off next week before returning to region play at Lawrence County.

Clements 63, DAR 6: Jayden Gilbert ran for 219 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries in a blowout win for Clements on Friday.

Gilbert also completed 6-of-16 passes for 100 yards, with Davin Holloway hauling in four catches for 84 yards and a touchdown. Dominic Holt carried the ball 10 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns as the Colts rolled up 449 yards on the ground. Clements finished with 559 yards of total offense.

Clements (3-3, 1-2 in Class 3A, Region 8 play) hosts Marion County next week before returning to region play at Elkmont.

Sardis 21, Brewer 14: Brewer had possession of the ball with an opportunity to tie the game or go for the win with less than three minutes in regulation, but a Sardis interception sealed the victory for the Lions.

Brewer led 14-7 at the half before Sardis rallied to tie the game at 14-14 in the third quarter. A touchdown by Blaze Gerhart gave Sardis a 21-14 lead with less than six minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

Brewer (3-3, 2-1 in Class 5A, Region 8) returns to region play next week against Russellville.
