High School Football: Breaking down the 2023 schedule from Week 1 to Week 11
The high school football season is creeping up quickly, and we've compiled the complete 2023 schedule for all teams in the TRN Sports coverage area. Here are a few notes about the schedule followed by a week-by-week list of every matchup.
* Memorial Stadium won’t be too busy on Thursday nights this fall as four of the 11 regular season weeks will have games. Wichita Falls High School will play twice (Plainview and Iowa Park), while Rider (Lubbock-Cooper) and Hirschi (Graham) have one home Thursday date.
* One of the reasons that number is less than normal is because there’s a Friday Memorial doubleheader on Friday, Oct. 20. Rider hosts Amarillo Palo Duro at 4 p.m., then WFHS and Burkburnett square off at 8 p.m.
* The only other time during the regular season in the past 20 years there was a Friday doubleheader was in 2021 when Hirschi-Springtown and Rider-Lubbock-Cooper played in district.
* Hirschi starts the season with a Thursday neutral game against Clint in Andrews, and Rider also has a road Thursday district opener against Abilene Cooper.
*There are also two Friday nights that Memorial Stadium will be dark. During Week 6 (Sept. 29), Rider is open while Old High plays at Graham and Hirschi visits Decatur. Two weeks later (Oct. 13), Hirschi is open with Rider (at Abilene Wylie) and WFHS (at Decatur) playing perhaps its most important district matchups of the season on the road.
* There are a Saturday games on the area schedule as Chillicothe opens the season against Darrouzett and Olney plays a Week 4 game at Fort Worth Temple Christian at 11 a.m.
* With the exception of the occasional six-man pairing, area non-district schedules usually stay the same during the middle of a realignment with sites flip-flopping every two years. However, City View has a new Week 5 opponent in Atlas Homeschool after switching them out with Abilene TLCA.
* Week 1 is highlighted by the last Rider vs. WFHS football game which will kick off at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25. The later start time is to help with the heavy crowds. But that Friday also features a few all-area contests with a new coach making his debut (Holliday-Iowa Park, Graham-Bowie, Vernon-Cty View).
* Former Seymour standout quarterback Keegan Gilbreath will be making his six-man debut against an area foe as two-time defending champ Westbrook will face Knox City in the first game of Jayton’s Kickoff Classic starting Aug. 24.
* After a controversial finish last year, Wichita Christian won’t be playing Roby in Week 4 and instead will travel to Rule. The Stars also face Saint Jo and Newcastle JV squads instead of varsity ones this year.
* Once again, DIstrict 6-3A Division II will have 7:30 p.m. start times so Holliday, Henrietta and City View will have later kickoffs than almost every other 11-man school in the area. Nocona’s district is the only other one with 7:30 p.m. kickoffs.
* Once again, Windthorst will have a non-district game after its district season has started. After opening 7-2A Division II play against Haskell on Sept. 22, the Trojans will meet Bremond on Sept. 29 in Aledo.
