High School Football: Abilene Wylie outlasts Plainview in wild district opener

DISTRICT 2-5A DIVISION II

ABILENE WYLIE 36, PLAINVIEW 34

Top performers

Wylie: Malachi Daniels 20-186 TD rushing; Bear Meng 4-12 83 yards 3 TDs passing.

Plainview: Seth Mayberry 22-30 191 yards TD passing, 22-63 TD rushing.

Highlights: Bear Meng threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as Wylie edged Plainview in the district opener Friday at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium in Plainview.

Meng’s 1-yard TD run with 1:17 left in the game put Wylie up 36-26 and proved to be the game-winner.

Brock Nails returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a TD, and Plainview converted on the two-point conversion to pull with two.

Wylie, though, recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock for the victory.

Meng threw a 28-yard TD pass to Derrick Evans for the game’s first score early in the first quarter.

Plainview answered as Seth Mayberry threw a 10-yard TD pass to Maddox Ellis with 1:17 to play in the opening quarter.

However, Wylie’s Kenny Scott returned a fumble on a bad snap on the PAT kick attempt for two points for a 9-6 lead.

Plainview took a 13-9 lead as Rene Zamarripa ran 2 yards for a TD, and Plainview also converted the two-point conversion with 6:08 remaining in the second quarter.

The see-saw battle continued. Meng threw a 35-yard TD pass to Braden Regala, and Damien Valenzuela returned the kickoff 95 yards for a Plainview TD and 20-16 halftime lead.

Wylie broke the game open, scoring the next two TDs. Malachi Daniels ran 35 yards for a TD in the third quarter, and Cash Martin returned a fumble 85 yards for a 29-20 Wylie lead with 4:43 left in the game.

Mayberry got a 1-yard TD run for Plainview, but Wylie blocked the PAT.

DISTRICT 2-5A DIVISION I

ABILENE HIGH 55, AMARILLO CAPROCK 0

Highlights: Dylan Slack threw for two TDs, while Brayden Henry and Chad Lara ran for two more each as the Eagles blasted the Longhorns at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo.

Slack threw a 55-yard TD pass to Bryson Perez, and he also threw a 10-yard TD pass to Ryland Bradford – the latter set up by a Tre Sharp interception.

Bradford also had a 91-yard TD run. Henry had TD runs of 18 and 20 yards, while Lara had TD runs of 11 and 4 yards.

De’Zhon Magee scored the game's final TD, a 14-yard run.

The Eagles led 41-0 at halftime and outgained the Longhorns 453-166, including 314-(minus 11) on the ground.

The win sets up a showdown with Lubbock-Cooper (4-2, 2-0) for sole possession of first next week in Abilene. The Pirates beat Amarillo High 49-19 on Friday.

Highlights: Ike Hall threw for 139 yards and two TDs, ran for two more, including a 68-yarder, and caught a 41-yard pass from Braeden Stacks for another to spark the No. 10 Lions in the league opener in Big Spring.

Levi Pearson ran for 151 yards and two TDs, and he also caught a 48-yard pass from Hall for another TD as Brownwood bounced back from a 27-17 loss to Stephenville.

Kavien Ford ran 14 yards for the Steers’ lone TD with his team down 21-0.

Highlights: Greenwood scored a late TD to deny Snyer in the district opener in Snyder.

Carlos Soltero’s 30-yard field goal gave the Tigers a 23-21 lead, before the Rangers got the game-winning score.

Greenwood had taken a 21-20 lead on an 83-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Easton Stewart threw a 15-yard TD pass to Dom Dominguez as the teams played to a 7-7 halftime tie.

Smith ran for TDs of 6 and 1 yards, while Greenwood returned a kickoff 60 yards for a TD – all in the third quarter.

Jim Ned quarterback Dean Guffey threw a TD pass to Jackson Crane, and Crane also ran 14 yards for a TD. Noah Powell returned a fumble for a TD, and Gavin Brooks had a 90-yard kickoff return to spark the Tuscola crew.
