High School Football: Big second half lifts Abilene Cooper over El Paso Chapin in playoffs

REGION I-5A DII BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFF

ABILENE COOPER 42, EL PASO CHAPIN 27

Top performers

Highlights: Daniel Bray ran for 253 yards and three TDs, while Austin Cummins threw for 130 yards and two TDs as Cooper rallied to beat the Huskies in the playoff opener Friday night in El Paso.

Chapin led 10-7 at halftime. Brandon Ortega ran 14 yards for a Huskies’ TD and Ivan Dominguez snapped a 7-7 tie with a 24-yard field goal with nine seconds left in the first half,

Bray scored the game’s first points – a 77-yard TD run.

Cooper broke the game open in the third quarter. Cummins threw a 40-yard TD pass to Jaden Carrillo for the go-ahead lead with 10:30 to play in the third quarter. Bray followed with a 23-yard TD a little more than a minute later, and Cummins added a 7-yard TD run for a 28-10 lead with 6:08 to play in the third.

Daveon Singleton ran 3 yards for a Chapin TD with 1:40 left in the third quarter, but Bray answered it with a 65-yard TD run just 18 seconds later.

Dominquez hit a 28-yard field, and Singleton threw a 48-yard TD pass to Brent Hallman in the fourth quarter.

Cummins also threw a 49-yard TD to tight end Clayton Gift for the Coogs’ final score.

Records: Cooper 5-6; Chapin 7-4

Next: Cooper plays No. 8 Colleyville Heritage (10-1) at 7 p.m. Friday in a second-round game at Newsom Stadium in Mansfield. Heritage beat Denton High 71-13 on Friday.

Highlights: Ryland Bradford ran for two TDs, caught a pass for another and returned a kickoff 77 yards for a touchdown as Abilene High crushed El Paso Hanks in a Region I-5A Division I bi-district playoff game Thursday at Shotwell Stadium.

The Eagles led 28-0 after the first quarter and 70-0 at halftime as six different players scored TDs.

AHS amassed 436 total yards, including 295 on the ground. Hanks had 188 total yards, including 129 passing, and lost four turnovers while AHS didn’t turn the ball over.

Brayden Henry ran for TDs of 47, 2 and 28 yards, and Chad Lara added TD runs of 7 and 1 yards — all in the first half.

Dylan Slack also threw TD passes of 11 and 37 yards to Bradford and Jackson Howle in the half. Tre Sharp also returned an interception 32 yards for the game’s second TD.

Bradford ran for TDs of 34 and 51 yards in the first half, and he opened the second half with a 77-yard kickoff return to put the Eagles up 77-0.

Bam Rashaw, who missed most of the season with an injury, returned and got a 27-yard TD run in the second half.

Down 84-0, Andress scored two TDs in the game’s final 9:43. Marcus Porras threw TD passes of 23 and 45 yards to Jude Blanco.

Records: El Paso Hanks 6-5; Abilene High 9-2

Next: Abilene High plays Denton Ryan (8-2) at 7 p.m. Friday in a second-round playoff game at 7 p.m. Friday at Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium in Fort Worth. Ryan beat Lake Belton 38-13 on Friday.

REGION II-2A DII BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFF

ALBANY 60, ELDORADO 0

Top performers

Albany: Adam Hill 13-153 5 TDs rushing

Highlights: Adam Hill ran for five TDs, including the game’s first four, and Chip Chambers threw three TD passes as the No. 1 and defending state champion Lions blasted Eldorado in the playoff opener Thursday night at Wolf Stadium in Colorado City.

Hill ran for TDs of 48, 1, 7 and 7 yards for a 26-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Chambers then threw TD passes of 38, 13 and 22 yards to Cason Fairchild, Calhan Fairchild and Branson Beal, respectively, to roll into halftime leading 47-0.

Hill got his fifth TD in the third quarter, a 26-yarder, and Breylon Billington ran 23 yards for the final TD.

Records: Eldorado 5-5; Albany 11-0

Next: Albany plays the Celeste (8-3) in the next round. Celeste beat Seymour 41-12 on Friday.

REGION I-2A DI BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFF

HAWLEY 63, ANTHONY 12

Top performers

Hawley: Keagan Ables 16-21-0—330 7 TDs passing; Diontay Ramon 4-107 3 TDs receiving; Tate Scott 4-125 2 TDs receiving.

Highlights: Keagan Ables threw for 330 yards and seven touchdowns, including three to Diontay Ramon, as the defending state champion Bearcats mauled Anthony in the playoff opener Thursday in Wink.

Tate Scott also caught two TD passes, while Chandlin Myers and Landon Sykora had one each. Sykora also ran for a TD, and Myers returned a kickoff 85 yards for another.

Eli Daniel, Sykora and Myers each picked off a pass.

Records: Anthony 3-7; Hawley 9-2.

Next: Hawley, ranked No. 6 in the state, the plays Panhandle (10-1) at 8 p.m. Friday at Lowrey Field in Lubbock. Panhandle beat Tahoka 92-54 on Friday.

Highlights: Ryan Gafford completed all eight pass attempts – half for touchdowns – as No. 5 Stephenville eased past Fort Worth Western Hills on Thursday at Tarleton Memorial Stadium in Stephenville.

Tristian Gentry, Nate Bullion, Wyatt Kreutz and Judson Wells each had TD catches for the Yellow Jackets. Latrell Titus and Gafford also ran for a TD each.

Brownwood: Ike Hall 6-13-0—215 5 TDs passing, 4-113 TD rushing; Morsello Hooker 3-121 3 TDs receiving; Carson Noe 3-94 2 TD receiving

Highlights: Ike Hall threw for 215 yards and five TDs while running for another to spark No. 6 Brownwood past San Elizario in the playoff opener at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.

The Lions’ first three TDs were passes of 34, 65 and 22 yards to Morsello Hooker. Brownwood closed the first half with a 63-yard punt return for a TD by Jordyn Nickerson.

Hall added TD passes of 64 and 25 yards to Carson Noe in the second half, and he ran 87 yards for a TD.

San Elizario avoided the shutout when Raven Prado ran 31 yards for a TD in the final minutes of the game.

Records: San Elizario 2-7; Brownwood 9-1

Next: Brownwood plays Canyon Randall (7-4) in the area round. Randall beat Burkburnett 48-21 on Friday.

REGION I-4A DII BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFF

SWEETWATER 35, GODLEY 34

Sweetwater: Caiden Ortiz 23-35-1—269 2 TDs passing; Korda Moore 18-98 2 TDs rushing; Jadyn Forbes 10-139 TD receiving

Highlights: Caiden Ortiz threw for 269 yards and two TDs, and Korda Moore for two more as the Mustangs nipped Godley on Friday at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.

Ortiz threw TD passes to Jadyn Forbes and Talan Lujan, and Alijah Iriarte also ran for a TD.

Clyde: Blake Carr 13-18-1—223 4 TDs passing, 28-149 TD rushing; Daijon Booker 8-175 3 TDs receiving

Highlights: Fabian Gomez’s 19-yard TD with 7:34 left in the game gave the Bulldogs some breathing room, and they held on for their first playoff victory since 2016.

Landon Yates got the game’s first score – an 8-yard TD pass from Carr early in the first quarter.

Peaster took the lead on TD runs of 8 and 34 yards for Ty Steedly – the latter with 1:10 left in the first quarter

Carr threw a 70-yard TD pass to Daijon Booker, tying the game at 14 with 23 seconds to play in the opening quarter.

The teams continued trading TDs in the second quarter. Alex Bringman ran 8 yards for a TD for Peaster, and Clyde battled back to tie it on Booker’s second TD, a 13-yarder.

The Greyhounds led 28-21 at halftime thanks to Steedly’s 22-yard TD pass to Cade McCullough 22 seconds before the break.

Clyde, though, retook the lead as Carr ran 8 yards for a TD after the Bulldogs recovered an onside kick to start the half. He later threw a TD pass to Booker for a 35-28 lead.

Peaster had a chance tie, getting a 2-yard TD run by Bringman, but the Greyhounds missed the PAT to trail by one (35-34) early in the fourth quarter.

Records: Peaster 4-7; Clyde 10-1

Next: Clyde plays Shallowater (6-5) at 4 p.m. Saturday in an area-round game at Shotwell Stadium.

REGION II-3A DII BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFF

COMANCHE 26, HENRIETTA 21

Highlights: Layden Welch’s 89-yard TD pass to Kyler Beaty with 5:34 left in the game lifted the Indians over the Bearcats on Friday in Springtown.

Garrett Blevins got the Bearcats rolling early, running 75 yards for a TD on the first play from scrimmage.

Comanche closed within one on Sawyer Wilkerson’s 38-yard TD run. The Indians missed the PAT to trail 7-6 with 9:26 left in the first quarter.

However, the Indians took a 13-7 lead on Kazdon Thedford’s 1-yard TD run in the final seconds of the opening quarter.

Comanche pushed its lead to 20-7 as Welch ran 1 yard for a TD 2:42 before halftime.

Henrietta stormed back with two third-quarter TDs. Blevins threw a 26-yard TD pass to Cody McMillion, and Blevins ran 2 yards for a TD – the latter for a 21-20 lead with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter.

Welch, though, threw the long TD pass to Beaty to send the Indians to the second round.

Records: Henrietta 6-4; Comanche 7-4

Next: Comanche plays Scurry-Rosser (11-0) in the next round.

REGION II-2A DI BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFF

Highlights: Brayden Torres threw for 238 yards and five TDs in playoff win over Alvord on Thursday in Breckenridge.

Torres hit Jadin Jackson for a 32-yard TD pass for the score in the first quarter, but he came back to throw TDs of 14 and 20 yards to Brent Bouldin and Hunter Lackey in the second quarter. Blaze Hronek also returned an interception 52 yards for a TD as the Bluecats led 27-0 at halftime.

Torres connected with Lackey for TD passes of 6 and 44 yards in the third quarter, and Paul Salas ran 5 yards for a TD in the fourth quarter before Alvord finally avoided the shutout.

Records: Alvord 6-4; Coleman 9-2.

Highlights: Julius Profitt’s 39-yard touchdown pass to Cole Thompson snapped a 14-14 tie with 13 seconds remaining in the game and lifted the Loboes to the playoff win Friday in Colorado City.

Cisco played the game without quarterback Kannon Orsagh, who sat out the game in concussion protocol.

The Loboes turned to Profitt and Thompson to handle the quarterback duties, and both threw TD passes.

Ozona’s Christian Villareal ran 46 yards for the game’s first TD, but Cisco got a 4-yard TD run by Gus Hart to tie the game at 7 in the opening quarter.

It remained a 7-7 game until Villareal ran 6 yards for a TD in the third quarter. The Loboes tied the game as Thompson threw an 11-yard TD pass to Kelton Desmond.

It appeared the game was headed to overtime before Profitt hit Thompson for the game-winning score.

Records: Ozona 6-5; Cisco 5-6

Highlights: No. 2 Knox City exploded for 37 second-quarter points to open the playoffs with a mercy-rule victory over the Kangaroos.

The game was stopped at halftime on the 45-point mercy rule.

Tristin Baxter ran for TDs of 2, 17 and 1 yards for the Greyhounds, while Cameron Hernandez had TD runs of 4 and 22 yards.

Devin Guillory had a 38-yard TD run, and Bryson Callaway closed out the scoring with 44-yard TD pass to Guillory.

Kress got its lone score as Kingston Brumley threw a 45-yard TD pass to Cole Todd to make it a 22-6 game in the second quarter.

Records: Kress 4-7; Knox City 11-0
