High Desert Wrestling Roundup: Sultana's Cisneros and Granite Hills' Navarrete earn titles

The Sultana boys wrestling team, led by Denzel Cisneros, took fifth place at the Raul Huerta Invitational on Saturday.

The Sultans ended with 158 points as Cisneros led the way by capturing the 132-pound title after pinning Canyon Springs’ David Fletes at the 3:38 mark of the second period.

Cisneros won all five of his matches by pinfall. He began the day with a victory over Isaac Hernandez, of Tahquitz, and followed that up against Valley View’s Michael Santiago, Esperanza’s Jonas Nunez and then Santiago’s Lucas Holloway.

Three of his pinfall victories came in under two minutes.

At 120 pounds, Rocky Humphrey made a run to the title match and lost a 9-3 decision to Canyon Springs’ Max Murillo. Humphrey began the tournament with a bye, and then won three matches by pinfall to reach the title match.

His younger brother, Cael Humphrey also competed at 120 pounds and made a run to the semifinals, where he lost a 13-4 decision to Murillo. Cael Humphrey won a 7-1 decision in the consolation bracket and then followed that up with a pinfall victory over Alex Morones, of Santiago, in the third-place match.

Xander Firm placed second in the heavyweight division after losing a 5-2 decision to Jacob Groves, of Corona. Firm won two matches by pinfall and also scored a 5-4 decision.

At 138 pounds, Noah Villatoro took third place with a sudden victory over Marvin Garcia, of Corona. Villatoro dropped to the consolation bracket after two victories, and then picked up four more to capture third place.

Ryan Kruger (150 pounds) and Jacob Gunn (157) both took seventh place in their division.

Adelanto also competed in the tournament and finished in 11th place at 110 points and had six wrestlers place, with Eric Castaneda-De La Torre taking second place at 190 pounds. Castaneda-De La Torre lost a 3-1 decision to David Ito, of Roosevelt. He won three matches by decision.

Prince Norris took fourth place at 175 pounds, Jovan Reese (138) and Daylen Bell (215) both placed sixth place, Brandon Allen took seventh place at 144 pounds, and George Rosales finished in eighth place at heavyweight.

Excelsior’s Robert Cardoza took fifth place at 132 pounds after losing his first match and then picking up five victories in consolation action, including four by pinfall.

Lady's Desert Mirage

At Desert Mirage, Granite Hills’ Chloe Navarrete claimed first place at the Lady’s Desert Mirage tournament.

Navarrete picked up three victories for the title. She began the day with a pinfall victory over Cathedral City’s Isabella Rendon in 1:28. She followed that up with a victory over Indio’s Destiny Flores at the 1:46 mark, and ended the day with a pinfall over Vista Murrieta’s Nicole Grending at 1:08.

Her teammate Emma Seiler took second place at 100 pounds. Seiler picked up two quick victories in 39 and 50 seconds, and then lost to Shadow Hills’ Melody Camarena in the title match.

At 105 pounds, Alice Perteet took second place in a three-wrestler bracket. Perteet pinned Kiannah Quintana, of Cathedral City, in 3:02, and then lost by pinball against Poly’s Xitali Hurd.

Granite Hills finished fifth as a team with 70 points.

Dames of the Dungeon

At Santa Ana, Analucia Valdez and Arianna Estrella both took third place in their weight classes at the Dames of the Dungeon, hosted by Foothill High School.

In a four-wrestler bracket at 105 pounds, Valdez scored a decision victory over Angela Torres, of Rialto, for third place. She lost a 3-2 decision to Ruby Robles, of Foothill, in the opening match.

Estrella lost her first match of the day at 120 pounds, and then picked up two victories, including a pinfall over Nordhoff’s Lilly Wilson for third place.
