High Desert Sports Roundup: Riverside Prep's Raoul Churchill earns all-star game MVP award

The East squad, led by Riverside Prep’s Raoul Churchill, pulled off a comeback victory in the Agape Valley Conference All-Star Basketball Game on Friday night.

Churchill was named the MVP after leading the East to a 53-49 victory over the West squad. The all-star basketball team featured schools from the Agape League and the Cross Valley League at Lucerne Valley High School.

The East trailed by eight seven points at halftime and held the West to seven points in the fourth quarter for the victory.

Churchill led all scorers with 19 points. He scored six points in the second and third quarters. He added two points, a pair of free throws, in the fourth quarter. Churchill’s Riverside Prep teammate Lonnie Deshazier, and Andrew Vargas-Ulloa, of Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy, both scored four points in the fourth quarter.

DeShazier ended the game with eight points, and Jermaine Whyte added six points.

For the West, Silver Valley’s Jaylen Walker led the way with 14 points, and Academy for Academic Excellence’s Robbie Poulson followed right behind with 11 points. Jaden Sassone, of Silver Valley, scored nine points by draining three three-pointers.

Prep Baseball

Sultana High School 17, Serrano High School 8

At Phelan, the Diamondbacks took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on Friday afternoon, but the Sultans struck for five runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Enrique Casillas led the offense by going 3 for 5 with a RBI, three runs and a stolen base; Alex Gamez went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs; Eric Ruiz went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run; and LJ Borrego went 1 for 4 with four RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

For Serrano, Jacob Bannon went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs, and Tyler Van Duyne went 1 for 4 with three RBIs.

Both teams are back in action Wednesday afternoon. Serrano (6-6-1, 1-2 MRL) is on the road against Oak Hills, while Sultana (11-2, 2-1 MRL) hosts Hesperia.

Oak Hills High School 10, Burroughs High School 7

At Oak Hills, Paul Montoya dominated over six innings of work to lead the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon.

The southpaw held Burroughs scoreless and allowed just two hits with 10 strikeouts. At the plate, Montoya went 1 for 3 with two runs.

Jacob Webster went 2 for 4 with a RBI and two runs, Tyler Martinez went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run.

On Saturday, Oak Hills beat Palmdale 8-3 in nonleague action. Montoya went 2 for 3 with two runs and a stolen base; Webster went 2 for 3 with a triple, RBI, two runs and two stolen bases; Keith Williams went 2 for 3 with a RBI, a run and a stolen base; and Connor Wagner went 2 for 3 with two stolen bases.

Oak Hills (9-5, 3-0 MRL) hosts Serrano on Wednesday.

Apple Valley High School 11, Hesperia High School 9

At Hesperia, the Sun Devils pulled off a comeback to beat the Scorpions and improve to 2-1 in Mojave River League action.

Hesperia led 9-8 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

But Apple Valley scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead. Seth Robertson drew a walk to leadoff the inning and then stole second base. He came around to score after Ethan Yazzie hit a grounder that resulted in an error.

Another error on a bunt from Noah Celie allowed Yazzie to score for a two-run lead.

Ryan Martinez retired the side with two strikeouts and a popup in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Martinez worked two innings in relief and struck out four batters over two innings to pick up the win. Beau Lloyd allowed six hits and struck out five batters over five innings and was charged with two earned runs.

At the plate, Lloyd ended 2 for 3 with a home run, four RBIs, a run and a stolen base; Martinez went 2 for 5 with a RBI, two runs and a stolen base; and Celie went 2 for 5 with a RBI, three runs and a stolen base.

For Hesperia, Josh Flores went 2 for 4 with a RBI and two runs; Andrew Gutierrez went 1 for 3 with three runs; and Dru Lona went 1 for 2 with two runs and a stolen base.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday on the road. Hesperia (8-6, 0-3 MRL) takes on Sultana, while Apple Valley (6-5, 2-1 MRL) heads to Burroughs.

Adelanto High School 3, Silverado High School 0

At Adelanto, Chris Espinoza had a big day at the plate and on the mound to lead the Saints past the Hawks on Thursday afternoon.

Adelanto improved to 3-0 in Desert Sky League action as Espinoza struck out 14 batters, allowed one hit and walked two over seven innings.

He gave Adelanto a two-run lead in the third inning with a triple and then came around to score on a single from Zachary Viramontes. Espinoza ended 2 for 3.

For Silverado, Nicholas Padilla started and allowed three runs on two hits over three innings. Brandon Chavez allowed two hits over three scoreless innings in relief.

Steven Gomez recorded the Hawks’ lone hit.

Silverado (4-7 1-1 DSL) are on the road against Barstow on March 19, while Adelanto (7-5) heads to Victor Valley.

Granite Hills High School 6, Victor Valley High School 2

At Apple Valley, the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to a victory over the Jackrabbits on Thursday afternoon.

Seth Christensen and Van Skinner both went 3 for 4 with a RBI and a run. Cole Estes went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base, and Caden Wharton went 2 for 3 with a RBI.

For Victor Valley, Rafael Cabrera went 3 for 4 with a run; Ben Seidenkranz hit a double and scored a run; and Jerry Avila, Jadon Gonzalez and Matthew Yepez and Robert Middlebrooks each had a hit.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday. Victor Valley (3-10, 1-1 DSL) hosts Adelanto, and Granite Hills (5-8, 1-2 DSL) is on the road against Riverside Prep.

Prep Golf

At Helendale, Academy of Careers & Exploration Bryce Johnson and Jacob Hutchinson led all shooters in the first Cross Valley League match of the season on Thursday.

The pair of golfers both ended with a score of 38. Teammates Nate Carlson finished right behind with a 39, and Cody Grounds with a 40.

The Eagles combined for a team score of 210, which was 104 strokes better than Big Bear.

Granite Hills High School 20, Victor Valley High School 2

At Victorville, the Cougars are currently sitting in first place in the Desert Sky League standings after beating the Jackrabbits by mercy-rule victory on Thursday afternoon.

Granite Hills racked up 19 hits in the victory and jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first inning. The Cougars also tacked five runs on the board in both the third and fourth innings.

Mia Vazquez led the offense charge as she went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored .

A pair of teammates picked up three hits, while three others had two hits. Emily Marks went 3 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs, and Jazmine Gonzalez went 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Mariah Maestas went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, a run and three stolen bases; Mylie Shepard went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs; and Alina Salgado went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs.

For the Jackrabbits, Andrea Garcia and Adrie Gutierrez both collected a hit and scored a run.

Victor Valley (2-8-1, 0-2 DSL) is on the road Tuesday against Adelanto. Granite Hills (9-4-1, 3-0 DSL) is on the road Tuesday against Academy for Academic Excellence for a nonleague matchup, before wrapping up the first round of DSL play at home against Barstow on March 21.

Serrano High School 12, Hesperia High School 3

At Hesperia, Samantha Conan struck out 15 batters and allowed one earned run over seven hits to lead the Diamondbacks in the Mojave River League opener on Thursday afternoon.

At the plate, Conan went 3 for 5 with three RBI and a stolen base. Wendy Arauz went 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs; Samantha Thurber went 2 for 3 with a RBI, four runs and a stolen base; and Jamie Motley went 2 for 3 with a RBI and three runs.

For Hesperia, Vanessa Padilla went 2 for 3 with a run.

The Scorpions (2-10-1) are home against Burroughs on Wednesday, Serrano (6-6) is off until March 26 against Riverside Prep.

Adelanto High School 14, Silverado High School 5

At Victorville, the Saints racked up 19 hits on Thursday and beat the Hawks for just the second time in program history.

Adelanto last beat Silverado in 2019.

Four players racked up three hits in the victory. Monica Flores came a single shy of hitting for the cycle. She went 3 for 5 with two RBI and three runs.

Ce’onie Turner went 3 for 5 with two RBI, two runs and two stolen bases, and in the circle struck out 13 batters.

Briana Davis went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs, and Alyah Vidiana went 3 for 4 with a RBI and a run.

For Silverado, Haylee Stanislawski went 3 for 3 with a RBI and a stolen base; Janaeh Silva went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run; and Naomi Hernandez went 1 for 2 with two runs and a stolen base.

Silverado (2-7, 0-2 DSL) hosts Barstow on Tuesday, and Adelanto (7-6, 1-2 DSL) is home against Victor Valley.

Academy for Academic Excellence 8, Hesperia Christian School 7

At Hesperia, the Knights held on to beat the Patriots in a nonleague thriller on Thursday afternoon.

The Knights took an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Patriots rallied for five runs in the inning and fell just short of pulling off the comeback.

For AAE, Kayla Berg went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and a run; Aiden Carlson went 3 for 4 with a run; Paityn Thibodeaux went 2 for 3 with a RBI, two runs and a stolen base; Dayleen De Los Santos went 2 for 4 with two runs; and in the circle, Haylee Berg allowed one earned run on six hits and struck out 10 batters.

For Hesperia Christian, Gabby Stoops went 2 for 4 with two runs; Elyse Vander Weide went 2 for 3 with a run; and Sophie Anderson went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Hesperia Christian (4-3) is back in action Monday at Muir, and the Knights (7-0-2) are back in action Tuesday at home against Granite Hills.

Prep Boys Tennis

Silverado High School 14, Barstow High School 4

At Victorville, the Hawks improved to 4-0 in Desert Sky League with a victory over the Aztecs on Thursday afternoon.

Silverado got sweeps in singles action from Christian Sauceda and Ricardo Lemuz. They also got sweeps in doubles action from the teams of Donovan Smith and Mark Maradiaga, as well as David Ayala and Andrew Solis.

The Hawks (6-1-1) are back in action on March 21 against Victor Valley.
