High Desert Sports Roundup: Oak Hills boys tennis team wraps up an unbeaten season

The Oak Hills boys tennis team wrapped up a perfect season, going 15-0.

The Bulldogs swept their way to the Mojave River League title by beating Hesperia 12-6 on April 18. It’s the first MRL team title for the program since 2017.

Isaac Tovar swept in singles action for the Bulldogs with scores of 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, Josue Soto and Kanoah Pascua swept with scores of 7-6 (6), 6-4, 6-4. Hayden Christensen teamed with Angel Guzman to win two sets 6-0, 6-1, and then won a tiebreaker with his younger brother Ammon Christensen.

The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday afternoon at the Mojave River League Finals, hosted by Burroughs High School. Following that, the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs will be held on May 1.

Oak Hills is currently ranked No. 1 in the latest CIF-SS Division 6 poll.

Tovar 6-1, 6-2, 6-1; Behrends 3-6, 6-2, 4-6; Amato 4-6, 0-6, 5-7.

Velasco-Gonzalez 6-2; Velasco-Holstrom 4-6, 6-2; Soto-Pascua 7-6 (6), 6-4, 6-4; H. Christensen-Guzman 6-0, 6-1; H. Christensen-A. Christensen 7-6 (4).

Prep Baseball

Oak Hills 11, Serrano 2

At Oak Hills, the Bulldogs beat the Diamondbacks on Friday and are two games away from ending the season unbeaten in Mojave River League action.

The victory also clinched the outright league title.

Austin Allan struck out eight batters and allowed one earned run on eight hits.

Jacob Webster went 2 for 3 with an RBI; James Juarez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base; and Connor Wagner went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases.

For Serrano, Andrew Lechuga went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a stolen base, and Jacob Bannon went 2 for 4 with a run.

Apple Valley 4, Burroughs 2

At Ridgecrest, Beau Lloyd struck out 11 batters and allowed two runs on five hits to lead the Sun Devils past the Burros on Friday afternoon.

Phoenix Matsumoto led the offense for Apple Valley by going 3 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and a run, and Seth Robertson went 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run and a stolen base.

Riverside Prep 24, Hesperia Christian 2

At Hesperia, the Knights improved to 4-1 in Cross Valley League action with a huge victory over the Patriots on Friday.

Trent Bourgeois went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs; Cayden Johnson went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs; Isaiah Gomez went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs; and Andrew Logsdon went 2 for 2 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs.

Prep Softball

Apple Valley 20, Hesperia 2

At Hesperia, the Sun Devils smacked four home runs in a victory over the Scorpions on Friday afternoon.

Brynne Johnson struck out seven batters and allowed two runs on eight hits, and also went 3 for 6 with three runs and a stolen base.

Bethany Morrison went 3 for 5 with a home run, three RBIs, four runs and two stolen bases, and Peyton Gaytan went 3 for 4 with a home run, six RBIs and a run.

For Hesperia, Arnette Gonzalez went 3 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run, and Marisa Thomas went 2 for 3 with a triple and a run.

Academy for Academic Excellence 11, Big Bear 1

At Apple Valley, the Knights improved to 7-1 in Cross Valley League play with a victory over the Bears on Friday.

Aiden Carlson led the way in the circle as she struck out five batters and allowed one run on five hits. At the plate, Aiden went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs.

Paityn Thibodeaux went 2 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base; Emily Garcia went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run; and Kayla Berg went 2 for 3 with a RBI and two runs.

University Prep 12, Excelsior 2

At Victorville, the Jaguars improved to 7-1 in Cross Valley League to keep pace with AAE. University Prep and AAE both have two games left in the season.

Briseis Villanueva went 3 for 4 with two runs; Saidy Gonzalez went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run; Jayleen Lopez went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run; Amarie Castro went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs; and Dani Jackman went 1 for 3 with two walks, two RBIs and a stolen base.
