High Desert Sports Roundup: Oak Hills picks up 25th-straight win in MRL basketball play

The Oak Hills boys basketball team cruised to a 25th-straight victory in Mojave River League action at home on Wednesday night.

Four players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs, which have not lost an MRL game in nearly three years, in the league opener to beat Apple Valley 74-28.

Noah Walker led the way for Oak Hills in the victory with 14 points, five assists and five rebounds.

Isaiah Sharky followed right behind with 13 points and eight rebounds, Jeremiah Lark added 12 points and six rebounds, and Markel Brown chipped in 10 points and five steals.

The Bulldogs (10-6, 1-0 MRL) hosted Apple Valley in a game that had much hype after both teams strung together impressive starts during the preseason.

“Our team is definitely battle-tested playing a number of Division 1 and Open Division teams in the preseason,” Oak Hills head coach Rob Alexander said. “Our young guys are gaining confidence and really understanding how to play the game. We are 1-0 so I’m pleased with that. With our previous success, we know that we have a target on our back this season.”

The Sun Devils entered with a 10-4 record and a couple of notable wins to start the season. Jeremiah Wilkerson led Apple Valley with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists before leaving with an injury in the third quarter. Damian Byrd added eight points and 13 rebounds.

The Sun Devils are back in action Friday at home against Serrano, while Oak Hills is on the road against Sultana.

Prep Boys Basketball

Hesperia 86, Serrano 47

At Phelan, Antony Newman Gomez nearly outscored the Diamondbacks by himself as he dropped 46 points in the Mojave River League opener on Jan. 3.

Newman Gomez ended the night with a double-double as he also snagged 12 rebounds in the victory.

Mark Jones just missed out on a double-double with 11 points, nine assists, five rebounds and five steals. Nolan Newman Gomez added nine points.

Hesperia (9-7, 1-0 MRL) is back in action Friday on the road against Burroughs

Adelanto 70, Granite Hills 28

At Apple Valley, O’Shaun Rodriguez scored a season-high 27 points to lead the Saints past the Cougars on the road on Jan. 4.

Komari Lewis chipped in 12 points, and Joshua Mayers filled up the stat sheet with eight points, 10 rebounds and six blocks.

Adelanto (14-4, 2-0 Desert Sky League) is back in action AGBU on Thursday night.

Riverside Prep 52, Academy for Academic Excellences 51

At Oro Grande, Raoul Churchill scored 21 points with five rebounds and two assists to lead the Silver Knights past the Knights in a thriller on Jan. 2.

Marrion Brown added 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals; James Macey snagged 13 rebounds with two points, two assists and three steals; and Lonnie DeShazier chipped in two points, nine rebounds, six assists.

Riverside Prep (6-11, 1-0 CVL) is back in action Friday at home against University Prep.

Silver Valley 82, Summit Leadership Academy 20

At Yermo, the Silver Knights picked up their 12th-straight victory on Jan. 2.

Stephen Crawford led the way for Silver Valley with 15 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks; Javion Taylor 12 points and eight rebounds; Damien Grundy 13 points, eight steals and four assists; and Jaylen Walker 10 points, 11 rebounds, two assists.

The Trojans (12-1, 5-0 Agape League) are back in action Friday at home against Victor Valley Christian.

Prep Girls Basketball

Oak Hills 42, Apple Valley 28

At Apple Valley, the Bulldogs picked up their fifth straight victory, beating the Sun Devils in the Mojave River League opener on Jan. 3.

Oak Hills led 8-7 after the first quarter and then pulled away for a nine-point lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs (10-5, 1-0 MRL) are home Friday against Sultana, while Apple Valley (14-3, 0-1 MRL) heads to Serrano.

Prep Boys Soccer

Sultana 4, Burroughs 0

At Hesperia, Joel Hernandez scored two goals to help lift the Sultans past the Burros in the Mojave River League opener on Jan. 3.

Hernandez scored both goals in the first half, with his first coming from a free kick taken by David Melendez, which he headed into the back of the net.

Giovanni Vitela and Roberto Espinosa also scored a goal for Sultana, while Steve Arevalo, David Hernandez, Andrew Loza and Melendez each ended with an assist.

Sultana (10-3-5, 1-0 MRL) is back in action at home Friday against Oak Hills.

Oak Hills 5, Apple Valley 0

At Oak Hills, D’Angelo Martinez racked up four goals in the Mojave River League opener on Jan. 3 to lead the Bulldogs past the Sun Devils.

Oak Hills also got a goal from Jordan Guerrero; Jesus Candelas ended with four assists; Josiah Espinoza also had an assist; and goalkeeper Edgar Esparza made three saves for the clean sheet.

The Bulldogs (10-2-2, 1-0 MRL) are on the road Friday night against Sultana.

Hesperia 5, Serrano 2

At Phelan, Jorge Negrete scored a hat trick to lead the way for the Scorpions over the Diamondbacks on Jan. 3.

Anthony Hernandez scored the other two goals for Hesperia, while Luca Fragoso ended with four assists. Goalkeeper Nate Sanchez recorded five saves in the clean sheet.

Hesperia (9-5-1, 1-0 MRL) is back in action Friday afternoon at Burroughs, while Serrano (9-8, 0-1 MRL) heads to Apple Valley.

Prep Girls Soccer

Serrano 5, Hesperia 1

At Hesperia, the Diamondbacks kicked off Mojave River League action with a victory on the road against the Scorpions on Jan. 3.

Serrano got two goals from Haley Pratt and Mackenzie Bowman, while Giselle Corona scored the other goal and also had an assist.

Stephania Mendoza, Madison Baker and Aubrey Hendrix each assisted on a goal. Goalkeeper Addison McDaniel tallied six saves.

Serrano (3-6-3, 1-0 MRL) is back in action Friday at home against Apple Valley.

Granite Hills 4, Adelanto 2

At Adelanto, the Cougars improved to 2-0 in Desert Sky League action with a 4-2 victory over the Saints on Jan. 4.

Lianna Tsabur led the way with  two goals and an assist; Kayla Johnson and Karina Duran both scored a goal; Marisah Nolan dished out two assists; and Layla Lobato added an assist.

Granite Hills (9-5-1, 2-0 DSL) are on the road Tuesday against Victor Valley.
