Personalized license plates are always interesting to look at and try to decipher. Pondering their meaning can become a game, of sorts, while on the road with friends and family.

Have you ever wondered how some plates are approved, and how the Kansas Department of Revenue manages its hundreds of applications for them each year?

Each state, of course, has their own rules and regulations for personalized plates. In Kansas, a personalized plate allows for a total of seven letters, numbers and or spaces for autos and trucks and no more than five letters, numbers and or spaces for motorcycles.

Additionally, no type of symbol can be used on personalized plates in Kansas, which are issued on five year cycles.

Rescinded personalized plates in 2022

To filter out plates that could be considered obscene, profane or offensive, the Kansas Department of Revenue runs each personalized tag request through a massive list of 28,562 objectionable combinations — a growing list the Salina Journal obtained through an open records request.

If a requested combination is on the list, the KDOR system automatically rejects that tag. Because of this, the state does not have a full list of rejected requests each year. But it does keep track of what plates were rescinded after initially passing their combination check system.

Some entries on the massive list of objectionable combinations include "BADASS," "2HOTFU" and thousands of combinations that include explicit language. But others are more obscure and require some work to distinguish their message.
