New Hartford boys' title hopes dashed in last minute of overtime

FULTON — The New Hartford Spartans took top seed Westhill to the last minute three times Saturday and saw their soccer season end in Section III's Class A boys championship match with a loss on a goal the third time.

Playing as the third seed at Fulton High School one day after the New Hartford girls won their third consecutive sectional championship, the boys went scoreless with Westhill's Warriors into a 110th minute of play. The Warriors (13-1-3) scored with under 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.

Time was running out in the second period of extra time when sophomore Calvin Petrone put the first and only goal on the board and ended the contest.

Charlie DeMore was credited with six saves for Westhill which did not allow a goal in the sectional tournament and remains unscored against since its only loss to Class AA finalist Christian Brothers Academy on Oct. 10. The Warriors' previous postseason wins were a 1-0 quarterfinal in overtime against Whitesboro and a penalty kick shootout after playing to a scoreless overtime tie with Jamesville-DeWitt in the semifinals.

New Hartford (14-4-1) had shut out Mexico Academy (7-0), Central Valley Academy (2-0) and South Jefferson (1-0) in its three previous playoff contests. Chris Suriano made 10 saves on Saturday.

In the Class AAA match, No. 2 Baldwinsville (15-3-1) defeated Liverpool (13-1-4), the previously unbeaten No. 1, 1-0 on a goal in the second half.

The finals for classes C and D will be played Monday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill's Sheveron Stadium, and classes AA and B play at Phoenix High School. Center State Conference rivals Hamilton (14-5-0) and Poland (16-3-0) meet in the Class D match at 5 p.m.

Westhill represents Section III in the state playoffs and meets the Section II champion in a sub-regional with the winner advancing to play the winner between Sections VII and X.
