“My feeling is that over the last 18 months in the camps that he's been with us he has shown that he has got the desire to take that into a team environment and he recognises the importance of bringing others with him.

“Of course, Harry will need the support of the other good leaders that we have got around him. You don't become a top team by just having a good captain with good values because that has got to spread right throughout the group but I think he is the one who is ready to take that challenge on.”

Kane, who has scored 12 goals from 23 appearances, first captained England during last summer’s World Cup qualifier in Scotland before going on to wear the armband on a further three occasions.

England squad: A bold selection with a clear sense of direction

Kane last year described captaining England as the biggest moment of his career as he set his stall out for the full-time role.

“It was probably the most special moment of my career, personally,” said Kane, last June. “The manager told me (I was captain) just before training on Friday and it was quite emotional. There were a lot of emotions, lots of proud feelings and I told my family and my missus. They were delighted.

“It was something I have always dreamed about, as most kids do. So, to be given that opportunity by the gaffer and how the game panned out, to manage to score in the last minute was a very proud moment.”

Asked about his long-term prospects of keeping the captaincy, Kane replied: “I have said before I would love to be England captain.

“Obviously I don’t know what the gaffer’s feeling is on it. We have got leaders in the team and it is just the case that I am wearing the armband. I still play the same way. I still talk, I still shout in the same way.”
