Harbor Springs sets program shutout record in win, Harbor Light leans on second half

HARBOR SPRINGS — The Harbor Springs boys’ soccer team finished up the 2023 regular season exactly how any coach would love to.

In a three-game week, the Rams went 3-0, posting a pair of conference shutouts and two victories over rivals. They also held a 13-1 goal-differential.

And to top it all off? How about a school record set.

That’s what Harbor Springs completed Thursday on senior night at Ottawa Stadium, notching a 4-0 win over Boyne City to record shutout No. 11 on the season, a new Harbor record.

The win brought Harbor to 13-4-3 overall on the season and 6-1-3 in the Lake Michigan Conference, finishing in second place, only behind Division 3 power Elk Rapids.

Harbor Springs keeper Greyson Rife has helped the Rams be stout on the back end all season and was in goal Thursday when the Rams set a new program record for shutout victories in a season with 11.

Harbor’s Henry Juneau notched a pair of goals Monday, bringing his total to 29 in just his freshman campaign.

Everett Shepherd celebrated his final regular season game at Ottawa Stadium with a score and an assist, then Ben McShannock also sent one in for the Rams.

Sophomore Greyson Rife earned the victory in net with that 11th shutout and program record. Harbor allowed just seven goals across their 10 LMC games as well.

Harbor Light 4, Alcona 2

ALCONA — The Harbor Light Christian soccer team earned a 4-2 victory over Alcona Thursday, part of a four-game road stretch to close the regular season for the Swordsmen.

Harbor Light actually trailed in a 2-0 game at the half, before Landon Jakeway and David Chamberlin each notched a pair of goals in the second half of the victory.

"We came out a little flat, but made some adjustments at halftime, found a spark and played awesome in the second half," said Harbor Light coach Dave Caroffino.

Harbor Light turns right back around for a 5 p.m. match against Burt Lake NMCA on Friday, Oct. 6.

VOLLEYBALL

Harbor Springs 3, Harbor Light 1

HABROR SPRINGS — Meeting Harbor Springs in a crosstown non-conference match Thursday, Harbor Light Christian volleyball fell in a 3-1 final.

Competing and taking a set against a larger Lake Michigan program, Harbor Light coach Hannah Urman couldn’t fault her team’s effort.

"I'm really proud of how the girls played as a team tonight," said Urman. "We were able to rally well and played good defense – getting some of their good hits up. But overall, we just gave them too many opportunities to score and set up their offense."

Leading for Harbor Light was senior Ava Kenwabikise with six kills, Molly Ogden had 13 assists, 18 digs and four aces, Charlotte Gagnon had 19 digs, Anna Zielinski had five kills and 21 digs and Anne Chamberlin added 24 digs. Jayda Robertson also had four aces.

Harbor Light gets back to the court on Friday, Oct. 6 against Boyne Falls in a league tri-meet.
