Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, Boyne City teams earn basketball sweeps

EAST JORDAN — The only thing the Harbor Springs girls’ basketball team can do to stay within the Lake Michigan Conference race at the moment is control what they can control.

And for a ninth consecutive game Tuesday, the Rams did that by adding another victory.

Meeting East Jordan on the road, the Rams put seven different players in the scorebook and leaned on Olivia Flynn’s 31 points to help bring in an eventual 63-36 win over the Red Devils.

The Rams hit nine 3-pointers in the game, including a barrage of threes late in the third to really open the game up.

East Jordan was without leading scorer and guard June Kirkpatrick on the night, making for an even more short-handed lineup as they deal with sickness.

“I was proud of the girls,” EJ coach Tim Smith said. “They played great for three quarters short handed. I think it was a five-point game late in third before Harbor made four straight threes to end the quarter.”

Along with Flynn’s 31, Sophie Barnadyn stayed hot of late and scored 12, Bryleigh Rummer had eight and Stefi Reskevics added five.

For EJ, Lillian Stone and Grace Nemecek each had eight and Izzy Boyer scored seven.

East Jordan (7-7, 2-6) will next travel to Boyne City on Friday, Feb. 9 for another LMC matchup, while Harbor Springs (13-2, 9-1) welcomes in Kalkaska on Friday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Harbor Springs 57, East Jordan 49

HARBOR SPRINGS — A hot start and a solid night wrapping things up at the free throw line saved the Harbor Springs boys’ basketball team against rival East Jordan in a 57-49 Ram victory Tuesday.

“We fought and played hard all game, but just never got the lead,” EJ coach Nate Dzwik said. “Credit to Harbor and John (Flynn) for mixing up their defenses and keeping us a little off balance. Korbyn (Russell) played big tonight despite being their defensive focus. Trace Wynkoop gave great minutes and really provided the team a spark on both ends.”

Harbor’s Braeden Flynn opened the night with nine points in the opening quarter, then finished with a team-high 19, while Collin Lang added 15 points as well for Harbor.

Russell led EJ with 19 points, then Lucas Stone scored eight.

Harbor Springs (11-6, 8-4) now visits Kalkaska up next on Thursday, Feb. 8, while East Jordan (6-10, 2-8) welcomes in Boyne City on Thursday, Feb. 8.

KALKASKA — How do you top a hot shooting team? Shoot even better.

The Charlevoix boys’ basketball team did that Tuesday night when they traveled to Kalkaska and matched the Blazers’ intensity to earn a 56-45 win.

“Kalkaska came out and shot the ball well, especially in the first half,” Charlevoix coach Anthony Troshak said. “They played hard. Fortunately for us, we shot well and were able to come up with some timely stops. Joe Gaffney shot the ball very well for us tonight, when we moved the ball and played inside out, he was able to get some open looks.”

Gaffney finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists to lead, while Ryan Pearl had 10 points and five rebounds. Hudson Vollmer also scored nine.

The Rayders (14-3, 8-3) will try to stay within the LMC race with a visit from Elk Rapids on Thursday, Feb. 8. The Elks are currently atop the league at 9-2, though Charlevoix can make things interesting with a victory.
