Sophia Bordi was named the 2022-23 Gatorade New Jersey Softball Player of the Year on Friday and is a finalist for the National Player of the Year to be announced later this month.

The sophomore is the first player from Haddon Heights High School to be chosen for the award, which combines athletic excellence along with academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

Rancocas Valley’s Lauren Gaskill (2010) and Kingsway’s Kelsey Dominik (2012) were two previous winners of the award from South Jersey.

Bordi will take the field on Saturday as Haddon Heights attempts to defend its state Group 2 title when the Garnets play Jefferson in the championship game at Kean University. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.

After a record-breaking performance as a freshman last spring, Bordi has put together a sensational encore performance this season.

The right-hander has compiled a 14-3 record with a 0.43 ERA entering Saturday’s state final. In one of the most impressive feats in South Jersey softball history, Bordi fired three consecutive perfect games in her first three postseason starts this season. Among the 54 batters she faced during that stretch, she fanned 46 of them.

In 114 1/3 innings this spring, Bordi has struck out 258 batters and yielded just 30 hits and 17 walks.

As a hitter, Bordi is batting .346 with 10 home runs and owns a .778 slugging percentage.

Earlier this month, she was ranked as the nation’s No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2025 by Legacy & Legends Softball.

Bordi has maintained a B average in her studies and among her extra-curricular activities, she has volunteered as a youth softball and tennis coach.

Last spring, Bordi was the Courier-Post's South Jersey Pitcher of the Year after guiding the Garnets to the final Tournament of Champions title in state history.
