High School Volleyball: Abilene Wylie topples Wall for third at Bev Ball Classic

Wylie fought off Class 3A Wall 25-16, 25-22 to finish third at the annual Bev Ball Classic volleyball tournament Saturday at Cooper’s Cougar Gym.

Wylie, a tournament finalist a year ago, dropped only one match in bracket play Saturday — falling to eventual tournament champion Wolfforth Frenship 25-21, 25-14 in the semifinals.

“It was a long weekend, a lot of volleyball,” Wylie coach Shay Cox said. “I saw a lot of growth, a lot of learning. There’s always room to go up, but I was super proud of the finish.”

The Lady Bulldogs played well defensively and showed a lot of pop in the offense, despite playing without 6-foot-3 Indiah Maroney, who continues to rehab from knee surgery in December. She tore her ACL playing basketball.

“They’re doing great things,” Cox said. “I just always want to fix the little things we fall apart on and don’t do well. I think that’s just me looking to make us better. They fought and played hard, and I’m super proud of them.”

Frenship beat Midland High 25-12, 25-19 in an all-District 2-6A finale.

Wylie, which went 3-0 in pool play Friday, opened bracket play with a 25-19, 25-17 win over crosstown and District 4-5A rival Abilene High before running into Frenship.

“I never want to play somebody in district this early, but I was thankful for the win,” Cox said. “We worked hard, had to come from behind after some jitters early.”

Wylie plays Class 6A Midland Legacy at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a non-district match at Bulldog Gym.

Wall impresses

It was quite the weekend for Wall. The Lady Hawks went 4-0 in pool play, including wins over Class 5A Boerne Champion and Lubbock Coronado, then beat Region I-3A rival Holliday — the defending tournament champion — 25-18, 25-13 in the bracket opener and Class 4A Krum 24-26, 25-15, 25-18 to reach the semifinals.

Midland High beat Wall 25-16, 25-22 in the semifinals.

“They did great,” first-year Wall coach Taylor Howie said. “Their hustle and work ethic showed. I can’t tell you how many times we hit the floor chasing after balls, and it kept us in games. We were able to have an offense off it. To get where we got against the teams we were playing, it was just a phenomenal effort across the board.”

Wolfforth Frenship undefeated

Frenship didn’t drop a game in going 8-0 at the tournament, including 4-0 in pool play. The Lady Tigers opened bracket play with a 25-23, 25-17 win over Burleson, then beat El Paso Americas 25-22, 25-18 before stopping Wylie.

“I’m so proud of them,” Frenship coach Amy Mangum said. “They’ve grown so much over the past two weeks, and it’s just been fun to see the development.”

Midland High, 15-23 last year, didn’t drop a game all weekend until needing three games to beat El Paso Eastwood in the quarterfinals.

“I saw them a couple of weeks ago in Abilene, and I knew they were going to be strong,” Mangum said. “They definitely have some great talent. We feel blessed to have beaten them. The kids stepped up each game. I’m proud of them.”

AHS, Cooper fall in consolation

Abilene High went 1-3 on Saturday. The Lady Eagles beat Boerne Champion 13-25, 25-13, 25-15 in the bracket opener, then ran into Wylie.

Holliday beat AHS 25-21, 26-24 in the first round of consolation play.

Cooper dropped both matches Saturday — falling to Krum 19-25, 25-10, 25-12 in bracket play and Lubbock Coronado 25-16, 25-17 in a consolation match.

Cooper plays Midland Christian and Wall in a tri-match Tuesday in Midland.

AHS plays Clyde on Tuesday at Eagle Gym.

Clyde, a Class 3A team, beat Arlington Pantego Christian 25-22, 25-20 to win the Silver Bracket championship.
