H.S. Roundup: Fairfield Union baseball knocks off Teays Valley

BASEBALL

Fairfield Union 5, Teays Valley 2: The Falcons picked up a big Mid-State League-Buckeye Division win over the Vikings.

Jacob Forson pitched six innings in the contest allowing two runs on seven hits walking one and striking out six. Josh Bell got the save pitching the seventh inning.

Offensively, the Falcons were led by Garett Dilcher and Micah Hartman, who both had multi-hit days. Malachi Palmer and Kyle Wolfe each added a hit.

Bloom-Carroll 6, Circleville 5: The Bulldogs held on for a Mid-State League-Buckeye Division win over the Tigers, and in the process, improved to 15-2 overall and 8-0 in the league.

Aaron Black started and picked up the win and Matt Cline earned the save.

Fairfield Christian Academy 16, Zanesville Rosecrans 3: The Knights cruised in their Mid-State League-Cardinal Division win over the Bishops.

The Knights (13-4, 10-1) pounded out 12 hits and received a strong pitching performance from freshmen Brayden Stem, who pitched all five innings, allowing zero earned runs, two hits and striking out seven.

Stem also was a big part of the offense with three hits, driving in three runs, and scoring twice.  Matthew Keener (2 RBI/3 runs), Aiden Langwasser (2 RBI/1 run), and J.P. Vance (1 RBI/1 run) added two hits apiece while Sam Harper (2 RBI/1 run), Gabe Linn (2 RBI/3 runs), and Jimmy Schmitz (1 run) each contributed a hit.

Berne Union 9, Miller 2: The Rockets scored six runs in the second inning to set the tone in their Mid-State League-Cardinal Division win over the Falcons.

Austin Snyder pitched five innings, giving up three hits, zero earned runs and eight strikeouts. William Bolton pitched two innings, gave up no runs, allowed one hit and struck out two.

Cooper Mitchell went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Snyder had a double, two RBI and scored two runs, while Clayton Moore and Cade Pugh had and one RBI each. Bolton, Hudson Gerken and Luke Shafer added one hit each for the Rockets, who improved to 12-4 overall and 9-2 in the league.

SOFTBALL

Bishop Hartley 7, Berne Union 6: The Lady Rockets fell just short as the Hawks scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in non-conference action.

Madyson Redinger led Berne Union with a hit and three RBI, Madison Lopez had a hit and one RBI, Aleah Smiley had a double and Hannah Brown added a hit. Baylee Mirgon took the loss in the circle.

Lancaster 12, Groveport 1: The Lady Gales improved to 12-4 overall and 7-0 in the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division after their road win over the Cruisers.

Freshmen Kileigh Rohr gave up one run and scattered seven hits to pick up the win in the circle, and Reese Poston hit a home run.

Liberty Union 1, Logan Elm 0: Behind a two-hit shutout from freshmen pitcher Suzie Shultz, the Lions won a thriller against the Braves in Mid-State League-Cardinal Division action.

Shultz finished with 10 strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. Payton Hochradel went 2-for-3, including a double and scored the lone run. Sophomore Addi Osterman had the game-winning RBI.

Fairfield Christian Academy 14, Zanesville Rosecrans 0: The visiting Knights (11-3, 8-3) had their way with the Bishops in Mid-State League-Cardinal Division action.

Addie Stem gave up one hit and struck out 12 batters, while Madison Clauss, Katy Smeltzer and Stem all had two hits and Claire Deem, Caitlin Blair and Madi Rowles added one.

Berne Union 10, Miller 5: The Lady Rockets (14-7, 11-0) jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back in their Mid-State League-Cardinal Division win over the Falcons.

Josilyn Hedges led Berne Union’s 13-hit attack by going 4-for-4, including a double, four RBI and two runs. Baylee Mirgon was 3-for-3, including a double and a home run, two RBI and four runs scored, Hannah Brown had two hits, including a double and scored three times and Addie Hollett had two hits and scored a run. Mirgon picked up the win in the circle as she gave up eight hits, three earned runs and had 10 strikeouts.

TENNIS

Lancaster 4, Worthington Kilbourne 1: The Golden Gales cruised in their non-conference win over the Wolves.

At No. 1 singles, Parker Cohen won 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2 singles, Grant Hampson won 7-5, 6-3 and at No. 3 singles, Will Richardson won 6-2, 6-3. At No. 1 doubles, Evan Alspach and Jay Nicewanger won 6-4, 6-7, 10-7, and at No. 2 doubles, Kaylee Akers and Lilly Robinson lost 7-5, 6-1.

Fisher Catholic tops Logan twice: The Irish won both non-conference matches against the Chieftains, winning 4-1 in the first match and 3-2 in the second one.

Eight game pro sets were used. In match one, at No. 1 singles, Elliott Boley won 8-1, at No. 2 singles, Sophie Shaw won 8-1 at No. 3 singles Jake Krooner won 8-1. At No. 1 doubles, Reece Hagy and Annie McGill won 8-4, and at No. 2 doubles, Nathaniel Reiling and Elsa Rivada lost 8-5.

In match two, at No. 1 singles, Hagy lost 8-2, at No. 2 singles, Rivada lost 9-8 and at No. 3 singles, Reiling won 8-3. At No. 1 doubles, Boley and Shaw won 8-1 and at No. 2 doubles, Krooner and McGill won 9-8.

The Irish fell short in a Mid-State League match, 5-0, against Teays Valley.

At No. singles, Bolley lost 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, Shaw lost 6-1, 6-0 and at No. 3 singles, Reiling lost 6-1, 6-3. At No. 1 doubles, Hagy and Krooner lost 7-5, 6-1 and at No. 2 doubles, Rivada and McGill lost 6-2, 6-0.

Fisher Catholic is now 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the Mid-State League.

TRACK

Liberty Union wins quad: The Lady Lions won their home quad meet by finishing with 94 points and was followed by Bishop Ready (70), Fairfield Christian Academy (48) and Granville Christian (24).

Liberty Union winners were: High jump- Natalie Cotton 4’ 10”; shot put- Kat Aubery 30’ 5”; 100 hurdles- Natalie Cotton :17.8; 300 hurdles- Reagan Needs :54.7; 3,200- Kathleen Slaby. 14:39.2; 4X100 relay- Kyley Morris, Journey Morris, Reagan Thomas and Leiana Rice :58.2; 4X800 relay- Elizabeth Conn, Ashley Kessler, Hannah Chabot and M J McCleese 13:30.9.

Alison Sponseller set a new school record in the pole vault at nine-foot-six inches.
