H-D Boys gain break-through; Jackets, Bulldogs denied

Jan. 31—DEKALB JUNCTION — The recent strides of the Hermon-DeKalb Boys Basketball team reached a signpost on Tuesday as Coach Jake Fenlong's Green Demons recorded their biggest win of the season with a 74-50 NAC West victory over Morristown.

While the Green Demons enjoyed a break-through in their development, Harrisville opened a two-game lead in the NAC West over Heuvelton with a 73-34 win. In the NAC East Chateaugay turned back a challenge by Madrid-Waddington 48-36.

Chateaugay 48 — M-W 36: The Bulldogs took a 23-18 halftime lead and painstakingly held the lead away with a 15-7 advantage in the fourth quarter. Jake Johnson's 28-point effort wih 11 rebounds and 5 steals led the Bulldogs and Marc Beachard II (5 steals) and Pete Reynolds (8 rebounds, 4 steals, 5 assists) tallied eight and six points. Rounding out the scoring was: Cam Dumont (3), Dylan Bashaw (2) and Jake Reynolds with one. "Another classic battle in Madrid. Both teams brought it all tonight and left it all out there. Once again we dug in on the defensive end and were able to pull out another close game," said Chateaugay Assistant Coach Jason LaPlante.

"Jake (Johnston) once again on one ankle was able to do what he does. Cameron Dumont had a great game off the bench and Marc Bechard was very good down the stretch."

M-W countered with a balanced scoring effort led by 12 points from Jakob Mayette, eight from Ryan Mayette and six apiece from Jamison Zysik and Kolby Todd. Cole Smith and Aaron Putman added three points and one point.

"Good effort, came down to a couple of costly mistakes. The game was closer than the outcome. The Johnson kid is a handful." said M-W Coach Aaron Jones.

H-D 74 — M-W 50: Emerson McQuade continued to provide outstanding games in the backcourt for Coach Jake Fenlong netting three 3-pointers in scoring 18 points to lead a very balanced scoring parade. The Demons buried five of their 10 3s in a 28-13 break-away in the third quarter.

Jeremy Carr scored all seven of his points in the quarter, Noah Locy scored six of his 14 and McQuade and Bouchey (17 points) each each tallied five. Rounding out the winning total were: Nolan Carr (4), Michael Mauer (8) and Caleb Murcray (6).

Terin Rosenbaker of Morristown led all scorers with 19 points and Walker Belisle and Kam Toland followed with 12 and eight points. Dominic Perretta tallied two and Sawyer Belisle and Peyton Donnelly each added one.

Harrisville 73 — Heuvelton 34: The Pirates' defensive acumen continued to stop their opponents and start their offense in a second win of the season over the Bulldogs. Tanner and Nolan Sullivan combined for 20 and 12 points leading the winning offense which also featured: 13 points from Brendan Loos, nine poinrts from Liam Winters and six from Aiden Chartrand, Owen Paro and Joe Sheppard. Brody Smith added a free throw.

Rhys Brossoit buried four 3s leading Heuvelton with 17 points and Camden Johnson tallied eight. Other scoring came from: Colt McAllister (3), Landyn Ashlaw (4) and Leland Brown (2).
