Grizzlies to cut Bismack Biyombo; would he make sense as a Boston Celtic?

The Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly waiving veteran big man Bismack Biyombo to make room for another player per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Would the Congolese center make sense for the Boston Celtics to consider signing? So far this season, Biyombo has shown he still has some rim protection and rebounding in the tank, and the Celtics could use some additional depth in their frontcourt.

On the negative side, such a move might limit the opportunity for two way Boston big man Neemias Queta to get a full roster spot by season’s end, and Biyombo is a very poor free throw shooter who can be targeted as a defender. But the 12-season vet would not have the ball in his hands often, fits in the Celtics’ drop coverage and zone schema, and has real playoff experience.

His 5.2 points, 6.4 boards, 1.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game would take a dip in Boston with a bit less time for him to play most nights, but the biggest obstacle out there for ending up on the Celtics roster may be timing.

Boston will likely want to keep an open roster spot as they get closer to the trade deadline for future flexibility, and while there is a need for frontcourt depth, Boston has a greater need for wing depth.

Add in that the Lubumbashi native can likely find as big a role elsewhere, and it seems unlikely Biyombo will be a Celtic this season, but the fit is not a terrible one.
