South Carolina football commit Mazeo Bennett still sidelined in concussion protocol for Greenville

Greenville High School football standout wide receiver Mazeo Bennett is in concussion protocol and could miss his second straight game since a collision that put him in the hospital.

Bennett, a four-star prospect committed to South Carolina, suffered the concussion Sept. 1 at Byrnes and was taken by ambulance to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Greenville coach Greg Porter confirmed.

Bennett was at Monday’s practice but did not participate. He did not play in last week’s 52-7 win against Mauldin.

“He’s making strong progress,” Porter said. “He’s going through the concussion protocol. It started last week. It was good to see him up and moving around.”

The Red Raiders (2-2) are preparing to play rival J.L. Mann (4-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Sirrine Stadium. J.L. Mann is ranked No. 9 in Class AAAAA and is No. 5 in the 864 Huddle Super 25 list of top teams in the Upstate.

Bennett was the No. 1 player on the 864 Huddle Dandy Dozen list of top seniors in the Upstate. Last season, he had 1,683 yards receiving and scored 23 touchdowns.

He had scholarship offers from 16 Power Five schools, including Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, Texas A&M and Penn State. He switched a commitment to Tennessee and picked the Gamecocks.
