Green Beret takes on sex traffickers — and it's personal

Good morning, friends, this is storytelling columnist Brad Schmitt.

I'm grateful to bring you the intense story of a Nashville Green Beret whose baby sister was found dead in a stream last year — and he's doing something about it.

Matt Murphy's sister battled addiction for years before two hunters discovered her partially decomposed body Christmas Eve last year. Though authorities have yet to make any arrests, Murphy believes his sister, Sarah Vinick, was killed by sex traffickers.

"I felt powerless," Murphy told me. "I became a Green Beret, a special forces guy going around the world fighting terrorism, and I couldn’t even help my own sister."

Murphy since has started a nonprofit, Operation Light Shine, that he hopes will help law enforcement better be able to rescue human trafficking victims and convict traffickers.
