Late goal from White pushes Cambridge past Maplewood

Oct. 13—TOWNVILLE — The Cambridge Springs girls soccer team got a late breakaway goal from Michayl White and prevailed over their PENNCREST rival Maplewood 1-0 in a Region 3 game at Maplewood Elementary School Thursday evening.

It was a hard fought game for both teams. Cambridge Springs slowly chipped away on offense and had several good looks.

But Maplewood's defense limited them for the majority of the contest. Maplewood goaltender Mady Banik came up with several big saves.

A lot of the Blue Devils' chances came off the rush. Maplewood shut down the majority of the breaks, with White's goal being the only one allowed.

White's initial shot was blocked but she collected her own rebound and buried it for the game's only goal.

Cambridge Springs head coach Alex Escalante said a big part of his team's victory was player availability.

"This is the closest we have had to a full team in a while," said Escalante. "We had 13 players and it was a little unusual to have subs."

Given Cambridge Springs includes players from Saegertown, the entirety of PENNCREST girls soccer competed in yet another close game on Thursday.

"These are always super close games," said Maplewood head coach Ted Eriksen. "It's just the way it is and today was another back and forth battle."

The Tigers will move on to play Sharpsville at home on Saturday at 11 a.m. Cambridge Springs will travel to Girard on Monday for a game at 4 p.m.
