Participating teams: Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Edgewood, Eastern Greene, Lighthouse Christian, Bloomfield, Brown County, Linton, Martinsville, Owen Valley, Shakamak, White River Valley.

Boys golf: Area teams making the turn on 2023 season

Advancement: Top three finishers in each event and those who meet the state standard automatically advance to the Bloomington North Regional. Field will be filled out with the next four best results from the Bloomington, Terre Haute, Seymour and Madison sectionals. Athletes from the Bloomington sectional have historically grabbed a majority of the slots.

Events to watch

The 800 has been on the list all season as North's Nola Somers Glenn, owner of the school record and a medalist last year at state, leads the way. But instead of doing battle with South's Ellie Barada again, it's going to be Panther standout Lily Myers, who is foregoing the 3,200 to run the 1,600, where she's the school record holder and top seed.

Myers will also be a factor for the South 3,200 relay that crushed its school record to take the top spot in a state-best time of 9:15.58.

The 3,200 is now led by a pair of sisters, Edgewood's Clara and Hannah and South's Martolgio twins, Aurelia and Jasmine. Clara's best time is well out in front, while the next three are separated by just two seconds. Barada, with a 57.43, is the No. 1 seed in the 400 while Edgewood's Emma Edwards, the No. 2 seed, had a 58.61 at her conference meet. Clara Crain is No. 2 in the 1,600.

There are just three over 17-feet this season in the long jump, while six went over 9-0 in pole vault including two at 10-0, Edgewood's Ashley Abram and North's Hope Taylor. Head-to-head, North and South both posted 4:01+ times this season in the 1,600 relay.

In total there are a dozen marks listed in the top 10 statewide coming in, with at least one in every event but the 100, 200, high jump and pole vault.

Double trouble

North's Sarah Elliott, a native of Australia, is the top seed for the 100 and 200 in her one and only state series appearance as an exchange student. She's also on the Cougars' top-seeded 400 and 1,600 relays.

In the throws, North's Hadley Lucas is a heavy favorite in both as the defending state champ and school record holder in each. She has the top throws in the state (167-2 in discus, by 9-8) and 50-11 in shot put, by 3-5).

North's DeDe Eberle is the only athlete in the top three of three events, No. 1 in the 300 hurdles, No. 2 in the 100 hurdles and No. 2 in long jump, a half-inch behind Edgewood's Ella Hayden (17-9). Impressively, Eberle won all three events at the Conference Indiana Meet.

Others with a pair of top-three seeds are North's Cora Deemer (100-200), South's Helena Cutshall (100-long jump) and Edgewood's Edwards (400-high jump) and Sara Polito (both hurdles).

Teams to watch

Like usual, it should come down to a battle between No. 7 South and No. 8 North. Edgewood will also be a strong presence after winning the WIC title.

The Cougars will have nine No. 1 seeds and 16 total top-three seeds. South has four No. 1s and also a dozen more second and third seeds. Edgewood has three No. 1s and eight more in the top three, including all three relays.

Just a handful of athletes outside Monroe County are seeded in the top three: Linton's Audrianna Hale (No. 1 in the 100 hurdles, tied for second in high jump and fourth in long jump) and Becca Robbins, (No. 2 in both throws) and Martinsville's Laura Barco (1,600).

Lighthouse's top seed is Madeline Esslinger in the 200 (sixth). Eastern's Lilyanna Blais is also a name to watch in the 1,600 after lowering her school record to 5:19.66. Owen Valley's best bets are Kearstin Ceresi, fourth seed in shot put, and Lily Smith, fifth seed in the 400. Martinsville top qualifiers are Laura Barco (1,600-3,200) and Maddie Moscrip (300 hurdles) while the 400 relay is a strong fourth seed.
