Girls track state qualifiers, softball hurlers: Vote for the SJ-R's athlete of the week

Here are the nominees for the State Journal-Register's athlete of the week poll.

The poll closes at noon on Friday. Information about the nominees is below. Litchfield's Drake Gasperson won last week's poll with 2,017 votes.

Alexis Bowman/Emma Crawford, North Mac, girls track and field

Alexis Bowman and Emma Crawford each won three events and the host Panthers garnered second place as a team in its Class 1A sectional on Thursday. Bowman claimed the 100-meter dash in 12.38 just ahead of teammate Kaelyn Swift. Crawford dominated the 100 hurdles in 15.44 after taking ninth place at last year’s state meet. Bowman, Crawford and Swift each led the Panthers to wins in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Caleb Chamberlain, Chatham Glenwood, baseball

The senior pitcher allowed just one hit in four innings, which came against his first batter of the game, en route to a 6-0 Central State Eight Conference win over Springfield High on Thursday. He ended with four walks and four strikeouts and the Titans won their second straight CS8 crown.

Seth Impson, Springfield High, baseball

The senior blasted two home runs in a 7-5 nonconference win over Taylorville on Friday, including the go-ahead three-run home run in the fifth inning. He also had a two-run dinger in the first inning and finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs.

Madison Kacevicius, Greenview, girls track and field

The senior raked in three gold medals at the Class 1A Tremont Sectional on Thursday. She won the long jump in (17-5 ½), 300-meter hurdles (48.52) and 4x400 relay (4:22.44) with teammates Annalise Schurman, Macie Willis, Natalie Schurman.

Chuck Linderman, Sacred Heart-Griffin, baseball

The senior uncorked the go-ahead 2-RBI single in the fifth inning and the Cyclones recorded a 4-1 nonconference win over Rochester to end the regular season at 20-9 overall. Linderman, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, closed out the win on the mound in a game that was suspended in April. He allowed one run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts. He also scored the winning run in a 4-3 victory over Normal U-High on Tuesday.

Faith Nestler, Pleasant Plains, softball

The senior hurler struck out 15 batters, walked none and threw a no-hitter to lead Plains to a 2-0 nonconference triumph over Jacksonville on Friday. Nestler helped her own cause when she drove in Delaney Murphy with a single in the first.

Izzy Nowack, Williamsville, softball

The junior slugger ripped the go-ahead three-run home run in the fifth inning for her only hit of the game and the Bullets rallied to a 7-4 nonconference victory over Chatham Glenwood on Friday. It was her ninth homer of the season.

Van Schneider, Chatham Glenwood, boys track and field

The sophomore set a personal best in the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 56.14 seconds to come away with first place at the Central State Eight Conference meet on Thursday. He also anchored the winning 4x800 relay with Mason Daley, Will Patzia and Edward Wilson in 8:13.89 and the Titans won the CS8 title as a team.

Meena Taylor, Auburn/Lutheran, softball

The junior commanded the circle with 15 strikeouts in a one-hit outing as the Trojans eked out a 4-3 nonconference win over Buffalo Tri-City on Thursday. Taylor walked one and all three runs were unearned.

Abigail Wolters, Pleasant Plains, girls track and field

The junior totaled three victories and Pleasant Plains captured the Class 1A sectional title as a team on Thursday. Wolters beat out New Berlin’s Madigan Burger in 2:24.77 for first place in the 800-meter run and served as the lead runner on the dominant 4x800 and anchor on the equally strong 4x400.
