Make that six straight match wins without a loss for the Wachusett Regional girls golf team, coached by Nick Guerin.

Guerin, who has been the Mountaineer boys' golf coach since 2012, and also coached the girls’ team a few years ago, succeeds Cari Baker, a former Wachusett guidance counselor who moved to a similar position at Bay Path Vocational.

Last week, the Mountaineers finished off a perfect week with victories over Notre Dame Academy, Hopkinton and Westborough.

Wachusett is led by three strong juniors: Lilly Sprister, Emma Quinn and Lily Staiti, all members of and very accomplished golfers at Worcester Country Club. Other point-getting and reliable golfers in the starting lineup include sophomores Somer Staiti, Julie Minnich and freshman Elise Andreoli.

“The girls in our lineup have been very impressive so far. They all have good swings, putt well and really understand the game,” said Guerin, who was pleased to see former Wachusett golf coach, faculty manager and MIAA golf tournament director Ron Spakauskas at a match last week, watching the Mountaineers tee it up.

“I played a lot of golf last summer," Quinn said before a match last week. "But I broke my wrist in the winter while snowboarding, and that wasn’t good for my winter practice schedule when I like to work on my swing and hit a lot of shots in the offseason.”

Still, Quinn was the medalist at Bedrock Golf Club last Friday when the Mountaineers improved to 6-0 with a victory over Westborough.

“We have a lot of strong players on this team, and we have a pretty good bond on and off the course, so I see good things for us right through the end of the season,” said Lily Staiti, who like Quinn spent some of the winter recovering from a broken wrist, also while snowboarding.

“I couldn’t believe we both broke a wrist,” Staiti added. “On different days, though.”

Listening to her teammates talk about their wrist injuries, Sprister smiled and said, “I was planning on going skiing last winter, and then I heard about Emma and Lily, and I thought, well, maybe not this year.”

At Worcester CC, Staiti, a 6 handicap, has shot 75, Quinn 77 and Sprister 92. All three are big fans of LPGA star Nelly Korda, who, in an amazing streak, won five straight tournaments this spring.
