Girls lacrosse: Incredible rally sends Victor to B title; HF-L rolls in C championship

What’s a five-goal deficit with 16 minutes left to play?

Not enough to keep the Victor girls from defending their Section V championship.

As co-coach Jamie Smith put it, the Blue Devils showed a ton of grit in fighting their way back to not only force overtime, but four of them. And when eighth-grader Allie Pisano unleashed on her 8-meter shot in the fourth overtime, the comeback was complete and Victor was an 8-7 winner over Irondequoit in Wednesday’s Class B final at East Rochester High School.

“They dug deep, stuck together and showed a lot of grit,” said Smith, whose team played most of the four overtime sessions down two players due to yellow cards.

“They left it all out there,” co-coach Todd Thompson said. “You couldn’t ask for anything more from a group of athletes.”

Irondequoit (11-8) built a 5-1 halftime lead while holding Victor (14-4) scoreless for just more than 20 minutes. And when Maeve Brennan scored her third and fourth goals early in the second half, the Irondequoit lead was 7-2 with 15:57 left.

But Victor got to work and cut the deficit. Devin Livingston’s goal with 6:23 left made it a 7-6 game and it with 5 seconds left in regulation, Libby Boland provided the equalizer.

Three overtimes didn’t produce a decision thanks in part to Irondequoit goalie Emma Francis, who came through with some big stops to keep the Eagles in the hunt for their first Section V title since 1996.

In the fourth OT, an 8-meter shot was awarded to Pisano and the young attacker took two steps on the whistle, dropped her left shoulder and let her shot rip. It found the back of the net and the defending state champs are on their way to Saturday’s regional round against a Section VI team.

“The odds were not in our favor,” said Smith. “But they stuck together.”

HF-L built a 6-2 halftime lead, then extended it in the second half with nine more goals. With four players each scoring two or more goals, the balance of HF-L’s offense was too much for the Raiders to contain.

Shaye Angelo played her first game for the Cougars since injuring herself in an April 28 game against Mercy and scored four goals. Clare Ruff also scored four for HF-L and Taylor Blythe and Camryn Trybuskiewicz each scored twice while Lily Brady made eight saves.

For Pal-Mac, Reagan Diehl and Teagan Hudak each scored two goals and Milly Seither and Anna Priebe each scored one. Faith Beals made seven saves.

HF-L (12-7) advances to Saturday’s regional round of the state tournament against Section VI. Pal-Mac ends its season at 14-5.
