Girls Hanson Classic roundup for Jan. 14: Howard tops Titans at Corn Palace

Jan. 14—MITCHELL — Howard improved to 8-2 on the season and held off Mount Vernon/Plankinton, 53-47, on Saturday at the girls Hanson Classic at the Corn Palace. The Tigers outscored MVP 33-26 after halftime and led by as many as 14 points with 5 minutes left in the game.

Howard (8-2): Abby Aslesen had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers, who had 14 points from Kate Connor and 12 points and eight rebounds from Rylee Rudebusch. Howard had a 42-36 edge in rebounds and overcame a 2-for-15 3-point team shooting day. The Tigers host Hanson on Jan. 17.

MVP (5-3): Emilee Fox had 12 points for the Titans, with nine points each from Cally Faulhaber, Reagan Rus and Berkeley Engelland, who had 11 rebounds, as well. The Titans shot 30% for the game, including 5-for-22 in the first half, but converted 9-of-22 3-point tries. The Titans play next on Jan. 17 in Redfield.

MITCHELL — Colman-Egan never trailed Saturday in the opening game of the girls Hanson Classic on Saturday at the Corn Palace against Corsica-Stickney.

Colman-Egan (4-6): Lanie Mousel had 16 points and Kaylee Voelker had 12 points, as C-E shot 53.3% from the field. The Hawks had a 31-16 edge in rebounding but committed 23 turnovers. Colman-Egan hosts Arlington on Jan. 17.

Corsica-Stickney (4-5): Payton DeLange had 14 points, while Avery Broughton had 13 points for the Jaguars, who were held to 32.6% shooting and were 4-for-20 on 3-pointers. Corsica-Stickney plays at New Holland on Jan. 17 against Andes Central/Dakota Christian.

MITCHELL — A late push by Centerville came up just short, as Arlington used a 17-point second-half cushion to hold off the third-ranked Tornadoes in girls Hanson Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Corn Palace.

Arlington (7-3): Harley Johnson tossed in a game-high 17 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Addalyn Steffensen added 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Jaelyn Huntimer chipped in 12 points, five rebounds, one block and one steal.

Centerville (7-2): Lillie Eide and Thea Gust each scored 13 points, with Eide also grabbing eight rebounds. MaKayla Heesch added 10 points, and Bailey Hansen finished with five points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

MITCHELL — Castlewood erased a 10-point halftime deficit and took a fourth-quarter lead, but Hanson put on the final push to swipe a victory in the girls Hanson Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Corn Palace.

Hanson (8-2): Kylie Haiar paced the Beavers in scoring with 14 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Annalyse Weber tacked on 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Alyssa Moschell contributed eight points and six rebounds.

Castlewood (5-3): Madeline Horn notched game-highs with 18 points and seven rebounds, as Mackenzie Everson recorded eight points five rebounds and seven assists. Gracie Haug chipped in nine points, six rebounds and five steals for the Warriors.

MITCHELL — On the strength of a big afternoon for Reese Ross, St. Thomas More cruised to victory in the girls Hanson Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Corn Palace.

St. Thomas More (9-2): Ross, a University of Utah commit, posted a 23-point, 11-rebound double-double (both game-highs) with three steals and one block. Sloane Keszler scored 13 points with three assists, as Gabby Robbins contributed six points and five rebounds and Jada Mollman had five points, four rebounds and four assists.

Flandreau (4-4): Lily Klein dropped in 18 of the Flyers' points and grabbed three rebounds, as South Dakota State commit Claire Sheppard (a junior) as held to three points, three rebounds, two assists and one block. Lizzie Pavlis had eight points, five rebounds and two assists.

7 p.m.: Parkston (5-3) vs. Florence/Henry (7-0)
