Girls and boys basketball lead the way for this week's games to watch in Pueblo

With school finally back in session after the holiday break, the winter sports season is back up in full gear.

This week, there are many great games to choose from for the top games to watch in Pueblo, including some action for girls' and boys' basketball, plenty of wrestling action, and some inner-city matchups in the pool for girls' swim and dive.

Each week, the Chieftain will bring you the must-watch games from all of Pueblo’s home teams throughout the week. Here are this week's games to watch:

Girls Basketball

  • Pueblo Centennial vs. Swallows Charter Academy at Swallow Charter Academy, 4:30 p.m., Jan. 9

  • Salida vs. Rye at Rye High School, 5:30 p.m., Jan. 9

  • Falcon vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 9

  • Manitou Springs vs. Pueblo Centennial at Pueblo Centennial High School, 6 p.m., Jan. 10

  • John F. Kennedy vs. Pueblo County at Hornet Gym, 6:30 p.m., Jan. 11

  • Rampart vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 11

  • Pine Creek vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 12

The girls start the week with a showdown between the Bulldog and the Spartans at Swallows Charter Academy. Rye hosts Salida and South will host Falcon on Tuesday night. Wednesday sees the Bulldogs host Manitou Springs then on Thursday double header action as the Hornets will host John F. Kennedy and the Colts will host Rampart. The Cyclones will host Pine Creek on Friday to close out the week. Currently, the Cyclones are first in the South-Central League standings with a 7-4 record overall, and County is behind them with a 5-3 record. No league games have happened as of yet.

Girls Swim & Dive

  • Pueblo South vs. Pueblo Central at Pueblo Central, 5 p.m., Jan 9

  • Pueblo County vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo County High School, 5 p.m., Jan 9

Hornet Invitational

  • Pueblo Central vs. Pueblo West vs. Pueblo South vs. Pueblo County at Pueblo County High School, from 9 a.m. Jan. 12 to Jan. 13

There will be lots of action in the pool this week as South and Central battle it out on Tuesday while County and West also have a meet on the same day. Then on Friday, the Hornet Invitational begins with Central, West, South, and County, which will all compete at Pueblo County High School.

Boys Basketball

  • Classical Academy vs. Pueblo County at Hornet Gym, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 9

  • Salida vs. Rye at Rye High School, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 9

  • Manitou Springs vs. Pueblo Centennial at Pueblo Centennial High School, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 10

  • Abraham Lincoln vs. Pueblo Centennial at Pueblo Centennial High School, 11 a.m., Jan. 12

  • Harrison vs. Pueblo East at Pueblo East High School, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 12

  • Palmer Ridge vs. Pueblo County at Hornet Gym, 1 p.m., Jan. 13

  • Lewis-Palmer vs. Pueblo East at Pueblo East High School, 4 p.m., Jan. 13

  • Smoky Hill vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, 5 p.m., Jan. 13

Boys' basketball is back in full swing too with the Hornets hosting Classical Academy on Tuesday, and Salida will visit Rye the same night. Then the Bulldogs host Manitou Springs on Wednesday before hosting Abraham Lincoln on Friday. East hosts Harrison on Friday as well. Then on Saturday, a triple header is in town as Palmer Ridge visits County, Lewis-Palmer visits East, and the Colts host Smokey Hill in the evening to round out the week. Currently, the Hornets are leading the S-CL standings with a 7-2 record overall with West behind them at 6-4. No league games have taken place yet.

Boys Wrestling

  • Pueblo Centennial vs. Pueblo Central at Pueblo Central High School, 6:30 p.m., Jan. 10

  • Pueblo East vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, 6:30 p.m., Jan. 10

  • Pueblo County vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, 6:30 p.m., Jan. 10

  • Conifer vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, 6:30 p.m., Jan. 12

Centennial Invite

  • Pueblo West vs. Pueblo South vs. Pueblo East vs. Pueblo Centennial at Pueblo Centennial High School, 8:30 a.m., Jan. 13

There is a lot of action this week in wrestling as it's rivalry week. Centennial and Central battle it out on Wednesday, with East heading to South and County visiting West all on the same night. Later in the week, West will host Conifer on Friday, and then on Saturday, Centennial will host its annual Centennial Invite where West, South, and East are expected to compete.
