Girls Best of the Week: Cardington's Cameron Sherman wins a wrestling championship

Eight Marion-area athletes earned places during the 50-team Clyde Girls Wrestling Invitational on Sunday.

Cardington's Cameron Sherman scored five pins in her five victories to take the 190-pound class and be the area's only champion.

River Valley's Kylee Sardina was a runner-up at 140 and Highland's Caitlyn Mooty was as well at 135, while Marion Harding's Sophie Holt was third at 126. Highland's Chloe Perdas was fourth at 170 as was teammate Emma Bolton at 235, while Highland's Madalyn Morrison was fifth at 235, and Brianna Tuggle was sixth for Highland at 130.

The Scots were 11th as a team, while Cardington was 22nd, RV 30th and Harding 34th.

Basketball

● Pleasant picked up a pair of wins, defeating Ontario 72-50 and Kenton 55-47. Against the Warriors, Avah Steele had 19 points and Whitney Waddell 17, while against Kenton, Emerson Williams had 21, Waddell 15 and Kamryn Cocherl 11.

● Elgin rolled to a 61-26 victory over North Baltimore. Maycee Muselin paced the Comets with 15 points, while Jordan Wall and Sam Girton had nine each, and Delainey Boles and Gracie Isler had eight apiece.

● Marion Harding picked up a 48-45 win over Ontario as Aniya Mitchell scored 19 points, Adley Haines 12 and Sophia Pedraza 10 with six rebounds. In a 49-37 loss to Clear Fork, Mitchell led with 12 and Haines with 10.

● Cardington nipped Bucyrus 50-44 with Abigail Hardwick getting 16 points, Kinstin Henthorn 10 and Lundyn Blevins eight. Madison Caulkins scored 10 points for the Pirates in a 53-43 loss to Danville. In a 56-24 victory over Northmor, Hardwick paced them with 19 points and five assists, while Henthorn had 12 points and three steals, Magi Halabrin eight points and seven rebounds, Lydia Hess four steals and Caulkins seven rebounds and four steals. Shelby Cooper finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and four steals for Northmor.

● In a 36-33 loss to East Knox, Cooper had 12 points, six rebounds and five steals, and Ryann Brinkman put in 10 points with four steals for the Golden Knights.

● Ridgedale downed Ridgemont 44-29 with Hannah Cook nailing four 3-pointers for 14 points. No one scored more than six points for Ridgedale in a 44-24 loss to Fredericktown.

● Centerburg beat Mount Gilead 45-35. Danielle Pohlkotte had 10 points for the Indians, while Greer Simpson had eight and Ava Baker four assists.

● Kennedy Harrah produced 22 points and four assists, while Audrey Benedict had 15 points and Brenna Martino four steals in North Union's 52-45 win over Bellefontaine. In a 46-29 win over Indian Lake, Benedict went for 16 points and three steals as Harrah had eight points and Martino 11 rebounds and three steals.

● Highland took care of Galion 49-22 with Addie Mullins putting up 15 points, Aubree Bellamy nine and MaKaylee Merckling eight.

● River Valley rolled by Highland 51-29 with Lexie Hecker finishing with 17 points and Megan Clausing ending with 11. Merckling had 10 for the Scots.

Bowling

● River Valley's Alexis Manning put together games of 239 and 228 for a 467 series to help the Vikings to a 1,793-1,173 victory over Mount Gilead as Larissa Coleman had a 158 game and Shay Irwin a 277 series for MG at Bluefusion Entertainment. In a 1,844-1,545 win at Morrow Lanes against Cardington, Manning had a 211 game and Laurie Ann Cox a 367 series as Alexis Peters of Cardington put up a 178 game and 308 series.

Earlier in the week, the Vikings stopped Marion Harding 1,814-1,635 as Manning shot a 225 game and 409 series. Hannah Mullennix and Megan Adamson led the Presidents with a 333 and 313 series. Manning went 228-214 for a 422 during a 1,830-1,207 win over Galion

The Vikings competed in the Pioneer Baker Bash hosted by Jonathan Alder and finished seventh in qualifying with a 2,474. They made the bracket tournament portion of the event, but lost in the first round to No. 2 seed Beavercreek 2-1 in Baker games. North Union was 10th in qualifying and missed the brackets by 17 pins.

● Highland edged Marion Harding 1,259-1,219 as Elyssa Reigles posted the high game and series for the Scots. Trinity Flickin had a 265 series for the Presidents.

● Pleasant's Ashlyn Peters posted a 317 series in a 2,713-1,781 loss to Mechanicsburg.

● North Union's Ryleigh Rasey had a 387 and Lexi Bahan a 307 during a 2,295-2,083 loss to Urbana.

Swimming

● Mount Gilead took on River Valley, Elgin, Marion Harding, Pleasant, Mansfield Senior and Upper Sandusky during a meet at the Marion Family YMCA on Saturday as Abby Griffith was a runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke and third in the 200 freestyle. No other schools reported results.

  • In the Marion Star Girls Preseason Swimmer of the Year Poll, RV's Abigail Coyan took 911 of 2,561 votes (36 percent) to earn the honor. Mount Gilead's Abby Griffith and Pleasant's Stephanie Foos made the top three, while MG's Kamry Grandstaff, RV's Kennedy Hummel and Beineke and Pleasant's Addison Gierhart were other nominees.

  • As of midday Monday, there were 530 votes cast in the Marion Star Top Sports Story of 2023 Poll with RV basketball's Carson Smith and Marion Harding bowler's Jayden Combs records leading the vote with Highland's Juliette Laracuente-Huebner's track state championships and boys and girls basketball district results currently making up the top three.
