Girls basketball: Westlake, Cedar Ridge, Georgetown roll in playoff openers

LEANDER — Gianna Angiolet scored 12 points as the District 26-6A champion Westlake Chaps (26-5) raced to an early 25-11 lead and held off Round Rock (25-9) 47-34 in a Class 6A bi-district playoff game at Rouse High School.

“Round Rock is a really great team. They do a lot of things that are unconventional which makes them tough to prep for,” said Westlake head coach Vickie Benson. “I’m so proud of the girls for executing our game plan and being patient to let things come to us. “

Benson has guided the Chaps to a state top 20 ranking and the first district championship in five years while Round Rock had a tremendous season under veteran, but second year to the Dragons, head coach Doug Davalos. Despite graduating a pair of all-Central Texas standouts, the Dragons posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in at least three decades. The Dragons had only won 20 games once since 1992.

Westlake sophomore Tamia King had another big night as the inside post scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Bella Hesse finished with seven points, four assists and four steals. Katie Peiffer led the Dragons with 10 points while Brooklyn Eubanks added seven points.

The Chaps and Dragons matched up defensively with strength on strength but the Chaps offense and shooting skills proved more than the young Dragons could handle.

In a bit of a surprise, Cedar Ridge limited the strong Lake Travis offense to a season low as the Raiders won 39-20 in the second game of the doubleheader. Cedar Ridge limited Lake Travis to four points in the first quarter, trailed 14-13 at the half, then outscored the Cavaliers 16-0 in the third quarter. Devynn Davis scored all five of her points in the Raiders third quarter while Kelly Ufodiama scored six points in the game and Janiyah Alvarez led the Raiders with eight points overall.

Nine-time district champion Vista Ridge beat Austin High 69-40 using a balanced offense that saw four Rangers score double digits. Kianna Wormly led the offense with 15 points, Sayler Bourland and Nadine Adeleke scored 12 points, Nadia Adeleke added 11 points and Ella Nixon chipped in eight points.

Georgetown defeated LASA 71-27 in Class 5A bi-district action. Eagles guard Reese Hoadley poured in 40 points and Chasidy Lee had a double-double of 10 points with 12 rebounds. Guard Bella Dabbs had eight assists and no turnovers in the win. LASA, coached by rising coaching star finished at 18-12 after posting a 13-3 district mark. The season is the best for the Raptors since moving to their campus at the old Johnston High School and is the most single season wins in 30 years.

Liberty Hill survived a slowdown by Kerrville Tivy as the Panthers improved to 34-2 by edging the Antlers 25-20. Cedar Park got 20 points and 11 rebounds from Kennedy Carlyle as the Timberwolves beat Canyon Pieper 49-41. Mariah Dais added 13 points for Cedar Park while Allison Naylor scored 13 points for Pieper and teammate Alisha Pevy added 10 points in the loss.

La Grange jumped ahead of Houston Washington 19-8 in the first quarter and extended their lead to 36-14 at the half as the Leopards cruised to a 59-35 victory. Campbell Cooper led La Grange with 25 points. Kylie Trlicek added nine points while Tori Harold finished with seven points and the trio of Kaylee Holmes, Macie Collier and Xeriah Jimenez managed six points each in the win.
