Giants sign John Michael Schmitz to rookie contract
The New York Giants have signed center John Michael Schmitz, the team’s second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, to his rookie contract.
“Schmitz is a great guy,” general manager Joe Schoen said after selecting the center. “Smart, tough, dependable, played a lot of ball. Had a great Senior Bowl. He’s a good player and a great kid.”
Schmitz takes nothing for granted. He may be one of (if not the best) centers coming out of college, but he knows he’s got to win his teammates over with hard work and dedication.
“You’ve got to earn their trust and that’s by how hard you work. When you come in every day with a mindset that you’re going to get better and at the end of the day, trust is earned over time -– with time, consistency and proof. Those three things don’t happen overnight, so it’s going to — obviously hard work on the field and in your playbook, with your body, taking care of yourself and just honestly being a part of that team and getting close with one another,” he said.
With JMS having signed on the dotted line, the Giants’ entire 2023 NFL draft class is under contract.
Cornerback Deonte Banks, wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, running back Eric Gray, cornerback Tre Hawkins III, defensive tackle Jordon Riley and safety Gervarrius Owens had all previously signed their rookie deals.
