Giants select Daniel Jones’ replacement in 2022 mock from Yardbarker

We haven’t even gotten to training camp here in 2021 yet the 2022 NFL mock drafts — those ‘way-too-early’ prediction posts are littering the football landscape across the net.

Fans of the New York Giants won’t like this latest one from Yardbarker’s Seth Trachtman, which has Big Blue not only selecting in the Top 10 but abandoning their plans for quarterback Daniel Jones.

List

4 dark horse candidates to be Giants' starters in 2021

First up, a defender…

8. New York Giants: Christian Harris, LB, Alabama

Harris has been highly productive in two seasons for the Crimson Tide, totaling 140 tackles. An excellent athlete, he looks like a strong first-round prospect. Blake Martinez has been a strong player for the Giants, but is signed only through 2022.

And then the quarterback with the next pick.

9. New York Giants (from Chicago): Carson Strong, QB, Nevada

Strong was one of the most accurate passers in the country last season, completing over 70% of his passes in his sophomore season. A strong pocket passer, he could see his draft stock skyrocket this year. Daniel Jones could be entering a make-or-break year for New York after going 8-18 as a starter in his first two seasons.

Several issues here. If the Giants have the eighth pick that means they went no better than 6-11, which would indicate something went radically wrong this season. The reversal on Jones would be a disaster and would also put Joe Judge’s job on the line as well. If the Giants do not finish at least 8-9 or better yet, 9-8, ownership will not look kindly on this front office and coaching staff. Many believe based on how many close losses they had last year and the upgrades all along the roster the Giants will be one of the league’s surprise teams in 2021.

I can see the Bears taking a mulligan here in 2021 as rookie quarterback Justin Fields gets his baptism by fire and that pick could be a top 10 choice, but for the Giants selecting again in the top 10, I agree with many experts. They’ll be selecting in the high teens.

As for the players they selected in this mock, who knows about them as they still have a year of college ball still to play. The Giants have a slew of unproven linebackers on their roster they want to give opportunities and, again, taking another QB in the top 10 indicates they will be pushing the reset button in 2022.
