Giants' Panik out 6 weeks after thumb surgery

San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik will miss six weeks after undergoing left thumb surgery Monday.

The operation repaired a torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Panik was hurt Friday when his glove was hit by the left leg of the Los Angeles Dodgers' Yasiel Puig on a pickoff play at second base.

Alen Hanson, called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday when Panik went on the 10-day disabled list, is likely to split time at second base with Kelby Tomlinson.

Panik, 27, is hitting .267 with three homers and five RBIs through 23 games this season. He got the Giants' season off to a good start by homering in consecutive 1-0 wins over the Dodgers in the opening two games.

An All-Star in 2015 and a Gold Glove winner in 2016, Panik has a career .281 average with a .343 on-base percentage, a .407 slugging percentage, 32 homers and 175 RBIs in 461 games.
