Giants' Beede to make MLB debut Tuesday

The San Francisco Giants will promote top pitching prospect Tyler Beede to make his major league debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

The Giants put Beede on their taxi squad Monday and brought him to San Francisco with the intention to activate him Tuesday. Right-handed reliever Roberto Gomez will be optioned to Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

"There are a couple things involved, manager Bruce Bochy told reporters before confirming Beede would get the call. "We are going to need another starter coming up in 10 days. We are just talking about our best options right now (and) keep some flexibility with the staff."

Johnny Cueto, who was listed to start Tuesday, will be pushed back to Wednesday in an effort to reset the rotation moving forward. Fellow starter Jeff Samardzija (strained pectoral) is nearing his return after pitching three innings in an extended spring game Monday. He's expected to pitch in the minors Saturday.

Beede, 24, was the Giants' first-round pick in the 2014 draft. The right-hander had a 4.79 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Sacramento last season, missing time with a groin injury that kept him from being among the team's September call-ups.

Beede allowed one run on one hit in five innings of work in a start with Class-A Advanced San Jose on April 5.
