Giants activate Cueto (elbow) to start vs. Cardinals

The San Francisco Giants activated right-hander Johnny Cueto off the 60-day disabled list to start Thursday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cueto, who had been sidelined due to a right elbow sprain, will be making his first appearance for the Giants since April 28. He is expected to be limited to 85 pitches.

San Francisco optioned infielder Kelby Tomlinson to Triple-A Sacramento to open up the roster spot.

Cueto, 32, was off to a good start with a 3-0 mark and 0.84 ERA in five starts prior to the injury.

The Giants feared Cueto might have a torn ulnar collateral ligament and had him examined by Dr. James Andrews. The prognosis was that no surgery was needed and Cueto instead was told to rest his elbow.

Cueto is 125-83 with a 3.29 ERA in 11 major league seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals and Giants.

Tomlinson was batting .221 with no homers and nine RBIs in 48 games for the Giants.

The Giants are due to get another injured starting pitcher back this weekend, as Jeff Samardzija is expected to start Saturday against the Cardinals. Samardzija has been out since May 30 due to right shoulder tightness.
