Gervonta Davis pleads guilty in hit-and-run case that injured 4, including a pregnant woman
Star boxer Gervonta Davis pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor charges connected to a hit-and-run crash that injured four people, including a pregnant woman, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley.
Davis, 28, will have a sentencing hearing May 5.
The plea reportedly comes "with no agreement of what penalty will be at sentencing," per the judge. Five months ago, Davis had a plea deal rejected that would have seen him receive a one-year suspended sentence, two months of house arrest and zero jail time.
The charges Davis reportedly pleaded guilty to are leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, failing to notify of property damage, driving with a revoked license and running a red light. Per Bad Left Hook, he originally faced 14 misdemeanor charges that each carried a maximum sentence of one year in jail.
The incident at the center of the case occurred in Baltimore on Nov. 5, 2020, when Davis was alleged to have left a downtown club and driven a Lamborghini under police escort, until he veered away from the caravan, ran a red light and struck the passenger side of a 2004 Toyota Solara. He was accused of fleeing the scene with four people injured, including Jyair Smith, who was pregnant at the time.
Smith, who reportedly sustained a major knee injury that will affect her the rest of her life, said Davis ignored her cries for help while she was trapped in the smoking car when she protested his plea deal. From the Baltimore Banner:
“I begged Mr. Gervonta Davis; I looked him in his eyes,” Smith said. “I said I have to get home to my daughter, I’m pregnant. He never once came over to help me. He got his things and left” the scene, she said.
Smith is reportedly scheduled to speak at Davis' sentencing as well.
Gervonta Davis' bevy of legal issues
The hit-and-run case isn't the only legal issue Davis has had on his plate in recent years, even as he moves up the pound-for-pound rankings.
Davis, who holds a career 28-0 record with 26 knockouts, is reportedly scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 23 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in connection to an alleged domestic violence incident last December. Davis has pleaded not guilty to hitting the mother of his daughter with what police described as a "closed-hand type slap."
The woman he was alleged to have hit, who said on a 911 call that Davis was going to kill her and said she had a small abrasion on the inside of her upper lip, has since said he didn't harm her and has asked the court for the charges to be dismissed.
Davis was also arrested for aggravated assault in 2017, with the charges later dropped, and arrested in 2018 for getting into a fight in Washington, D.C., with an unclear resolution. In 2020, he was arrested for alleged domestic violence against a former girlfriend, with the case eventually discharged.
As all this plays out in the courts, Davis has been attempting to schedule a fight with Ryan Garcia after his most recent win over Hector Garcia.
