Georgetown swimming and diving named Boys Team of the Year at Austin Area Sports Awards
The Georgetown Boys Swimming and Diving team was named the Boys Team of the Year during the 2023 Austin Area High School Sports Awards, presented by Thomas J. Henry Law. The show was held at The Long Center: Dell Hall. Featured speaker for the event was former University of Texas and NFL running back Jamaal Charles.
The show is produced in partnership with Texas Children's Hospital-North Austin Campus, which also sponsored the Boys Team of the Year.
Other finalists for boys team of the year were the boys golf team from Westlake High School and the football team from Vandegrift High School. Westlake won the Class 6A state title and dominated the field, winning by 23 strokes. Vandegrift made it to the Class 6A state championship for the first time in school history.
But the swimming and diving team from Georgetown took home the hardware. Scoring an even 200 points, the Eagles ruled the pool at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Meet in February. They beat runner-up Frisco Reedy by 40 points. Leading the way was junior Jeremy Kelly, who captured two individual gold medals to complement the two golds he won as a junior. Pierce Brooke capped the championship run with gold medal in the 1-meter diving event. Both Kelly and Brooke have committed to compete at the University of Texas.
Kelly was also named the Boys Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year earlier in the night.
In all, more than 250 student athletes were honored during the show, which celebrates the best of athletics in the Austin area. Twenty-one athletes were honored as the best in their individual sports, as well as eight premier award winners, including Boys Athlete of the Year, Girls Athlete of the Year, Boys Team of the Year, Girls Team of the Year, Boys Coach Team of the Year, Girls Coach Team of the Year, the Courage Award, and the School Spirit Award.
The Austin Area High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA Today High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.
