Gavin Williams struck out the most batters for a Cleveland rookie since 1964, but the outing was wasted when the Guardians lost 3-1 to the Toronto Blue Jays Monday night at Progressive Field.

Williams' 12 strikeouts were the most by a Cleveland rookie since Luis Tiant also struck out 12 on Aug. 18, 1964. Williams allowed just one hit and one walk in seven shutout innings. He's the first Cleveland rookie to strike out 12 hitters while allowing one or zero hits in an outing in franchise history.

The Blue Jays did all of their damage against the Guardians bullpen, scoring all three runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

The Guardians lineup, meanwhile, mustered only two hits until the eighth inning. They loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but with two outs rookie Brayan Rocchio grounded out to end the game.
