Gators News: Football, soccer stumble and other weekend updates

It was a rough weekend for the Gator Nation as the football team saw its postseason aspirations evaporate in Death Valley at the hands of the LSU Tigers and the soccer team continued to struggle as well. The good news is that some of the other sports picked up the slack, including the volleyball team. Meanwhile, the cross country team saw some action in Tallahassee, the diving team hosted the Hurricanes, and both the women’s tennis team and men’s golf team continue to compete at their respective tournaments.

Here is a look at the weekend roundup.

Women's tennis

The six women’s tennis players participating in the ITA Regional Championships in Lake Nona, Florida, continue to compete today after making it through a weekend of play to make it into the main draw.

Cross country

The cross country teams ran in the Pre-Nationals meet at Florida State on Friday with 15 Gators posting personal bests. Overall, the men finished No. 30 out of 40 competing schools while the women placed No. 16 out of 33 teams.

Diving

The No. 12 men’s and No. 3 women’s diving teams hosted the Miami Hurricanes this weekend in the O’Connell Center. Results for specific events can be found on the team’s Twitter feed.

Football

The now-unranked football team took a trip to Baton Rouge and got burned by the LSU Tigers on Sunday, 49-42. Here is a look at our full coverage of the game below.

Volleyball

The No. 23 volleyball team swept the visiting Texas A&M Aggies in straight sets on Saturday to earn a much-needed SEC win. The Gators improved to 12-6, 6-2 SEC on the year with a road match against Alabama Crimson Tide coming up next on Wednesday. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. EDT and it will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Men's golf

The men’s golf team hit the links on Sunday at the Isleworth Collegiate in Windermere, Florida, finishing in 10th place out of 14 schools after the first round of play with a 5-over par performance. The squad is back at it today for round two, which teed off at 8 a.m. EDT.

Soccer

The soccer team lost its road match with the No. 23 Auburn Tigers on Sunday, 2-0, dropping the Gators to a 3-9-3 record overall with just a 2-4-1 mark in SEC play. Florida faces the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens next Thursday to wrap up its regular-season SEC road schedule.
